TREATY BY LEONARD COHEN

This song, treaty, is the second track in Leonard Cohen’s You want it darker album  which was released in 2016. I have not listened to all the track because I stumbled on it in a friend’s tweet on Wednesday. As is my fond routine, I delved into searching for the song.

To me it didn’t sound like a song when the song played, it’s gentle and soothing instrumentals oozing out of the bare speaker in my android device, for about 50 seconds I immediately concluded that it was not a song but maybe spoken word poetry. I waited and it gradually turned out to be a song. It’s quite an unusual kind of song I you ask me.

But, I will not dismiss, for anything, it’s true and unadulterated nature. You have to listen to Treaty by Leonard Cohen. In the song, he presents a case: your love and my love should have a treaty. That way, you don’t run away with mine. Well, the former is my opinion.

Do you think it is necessary to get a treaty in a relationship today? That’s what we get to talk about today. I’m Abuh Monday Eneojo. I will be your host for Daily Wisdom Words Music Prompt.

  1. He was married to the bottle
    Not to the “we”
Numb to the years of my one way love
    No apology
    The treaty is sealed
    We shall not speak
    All that remains
    Ghostly memories

  2. Treaty?

Words can be weapons of mass destruction
    when misused cost, cause loss
treaties come & go don’t-cha know?
words on paper don’t seal the heart
sometimes time & strife is what is needed to learn lessons in life
separations end, how do we find one another again?
time goes on, round and round like tree rings within
circle of life, repeat of history
when will we learn from mistakes, figure out life’s greatest mystery?
love not war tis the answer!
let go of anger, pride and ego
focus on inner growth, learn to love yourself; learn to love others…
when the time is right; fate, united with soul mate
with trust and love in heart and mind
tis all the treaty needed for love divine
life partner devoted to one another
no paper needed for what is written in soul
for those waiting long for true love
lips sealed together in matrimonial bliss
still waiting for that tender kiss…

    • no paper needed for what is written in soul

      👏👏👏
      I love that line.

  3. I’m dead to voices
    not mine not yours.

    I’m dead to me
    if you’re not in me.

    I’m dead to death
    if you stay with me.

With you, I’ll smile a mile
    until time mimes our love.

  4. Sighs sing our real now
    they follow today’s ghosts
    holding on to what was
    echos of love we made.

    Planting cherished fields
    our gardens flourished
    between your love and mine
    words frozen now are free.

    Sunless cold wafts here
    chasing my memories
    away as we beckon them
    looking for us again.

  5. I’m not scared of your love.
No. I only fret for what you
do not do now because only
I see the beauty you possess.

Tell me. Tell me now. Inside
this true source that lies not.
Do we need a treaty for this meet?
    Should I invite poseidon?

  6. Sunset kisses
    twilight’s intonation
    where murmurs
    your discontent
    sinners gather
    drinking in
    the crescent moon
    cloud full of stars
    found my bewildered eyes
    my thoughts
    ceremoniously calm
    trailing blooms
    between your
    heart n mine
    shimmers surprise.
