First, let’s take a look at the meaning of barriers is our Webster Dictionary-1. A circumstance or obstacle that keeps people or things apart or prevents communication or progress.
Daily Wisdom Word Meaning of Barriers-1. Walls in the non literal sense we build between ourselves and others
Barriers are walls we put up to protect ourselves. If you look at a bad relationship, it isn’t something you just see, its also something you can feel. What your feeling are the years of resentments built up of arguments going unsolved. Your looking at days of unspoken feelings and anger towards one another.
The easiest question to ask, is why does this couple even stay together? Unfortunately life just isn’t that simple. They may have financial reasons to stay together. There may be an unhealthy attachment to each other that has been built over time. Time has a way of doing this. Enough days spent together, and as long as the situation remains bearable, the attachment will come above all, unhealthy or not.
Why is this attachment thing so strong, we may ask ourselves? After you have been around a person long enough, they become more like family, and we never abandon our family, do we? The healthiest thing would be for both parties to separate, but that is not always the case because of this Pseudo family feeling they have towards one another. Also, if they have been married for 40 years, the sense of commitment to the relationship may be stronger than the need to abandon it no matter how bad it seems.
What else can barriers mean besides a literal wall? It can be the invisible wall that alienates us from our neighbor or racism. We tend to stick with who we think we are most alike, but that doesn’t hardly ever have to do with one’s skin tone. Yet, some people choose to pick their friends by the color of their skin or their belief system.
How do we grow? We grow as individuals in a number of ways, but one way is by being around individuals that are different then us. These people teach us about the world, and how to respect diversity and race. They teach us another side to life, and often, we find they are just not as different from us as we initially thought. These people are in fact, quite similar, and if we really look underneath it all, the main reason some people stick to their own and judge others for being different is insecurity and fear.
Insecurities and fear, (F-ALSE E-VIDENCE A-PPEARING R-EAL) keep us from trying and learning new things out of the fear that it will change us in some way. The really scary thing? It will change us by helping us to grow and appreciate other cultures and races in a way we would have never been able to before. Barriers are not good things, when referring to the kind that separate people from people. If you believe as I do, God created all of us, not just Caucasian people but African American people too.
There are other things that separate us with barriers. Perhaps it is something like our religion. That in itself is pathetic as well, because if we are grounded in our religion, learning about someone else’s from an actual source that could not understand it better than anyone else is sad. Who better to teach you for the simple education of learning about a religion than someone practicing it? Again, it is fear that keeps us with our own, or who we think is our own. This is the fear that those people will change us in some way, and guess what? They will. They will change us for the better by helping us to appreciate barriers and respect them, not by staying on opposite sides, but learning to see through them and move past them.
Another thing that keeps barriers up between us are our Political beliefs. If you watched one of the greatest men that ever lived in my opinion, John McCains Funeral, he had actual Presidential opponents speak at his funeral, and these People spoke there. They were not afraid. These people appreciated John McCain the person, and not one of them declined speaking at this preplanned funeral.
John McCain wanted to leave us with one last invaluable lesson: We are not nearly as different as we are alike. I would like all of us to think about that last line today. I would also like us to think that even if we are different, to grow and know one of different Color, Beliefs, or Origin is to grow. We cannot grow as individuals without the knowledge of what is different in this World, and we don’t have to believe the same way, but at the very least, we can respect others with different beliefs, thereby growing as individuals and learning about these other beliefs. We don’t have to believe like others, but at the very least, we can respect others for their beliefs.
Thank you for reading about today’s Daily Wisdom Word, barriers. This is a “Wise Wisdom Word” and one we can really learn from. Think about John McCain today, and ask yourself, why would he preplan his future with so much diversity? Perhaps he wanted to leave us with one last legacy, and he did.
