PATRIARCHY

PATRIARCHY

What is patriarchy?  What role does it play in our society?  Let us first take a look at the meaning of patriarchy in our Webster Dictionary.

Patriarchy-1.  A system or society of government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.   2.  A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it

Daily Wisdom Word meaning of Patriarchy-1.  an archaic society in which men rule the family in deciding who their daughters marry, voting rights, and make all major decisions for the family

Patriarchy is what we have fought against as all women in the United States of America since its inception and goes on still today in many countries for daughters and mothers around the world.  For instance, in India, a father makes the decision who’s family his daughter will marry into, and will choose the family and spouse for her throughout her life.  Divorce is no fault on the man’s side and nearly impossible for a woman to get on the woman’s side.  All voting rights go to the man.

In countries we have fought for, such as Afghanistan, a woman must cover her head fully with a burqa because her face is not allowed to be exposed or her body.  Not only is this Patriarchy, this is also religion and tradition. Patriarchy seems so unfair, but goes on in many countries today still.  It has not changed at all since the 18th century and likely will never change because it is the way of the society and how people in India and other countries live.

Patriarchy also holds having a son for a child in higher regard than a daughter.  It is common that a daughter not be allowed to attend college where a son is highly encouraged to pursue his education throughout his life.  He will carry these same traditions and patriarchal ways throughout his family and this will continue throughout the generations.

Also, voting rights and any type of government decisions are made by males.  You don’t see female priests and you don’t see women being allowed to vote in the first place.

This seems to be a very backward way to live, when you live in North America, and other continents but for the people that live under a patriarchal society, it is what they know and are most comfortable with.  It is worth mentioning that these are just a few of the rights men have.  They also make all the major decisions for the family.

Thank you for reading about patriarchy today.  Have a beautiful and blessed day.
