PRETENSES

What are pretenses and how do they play a role in some peoples lives?   First, let us take a look at the meaning of pretenses in our Webster Dictionary.

Pretenses-1.  An attempt to make something that is not the case appear true.  2.  A false display of feelings, attitudes or intentions.  3.  the practice of inventing imaginary situations into play

Daily Wisdom Word Meaning of Pretenses-1.  Pretending to be something  you are not.

Pretenses are shallow but based off of a deep inferiority and insecurity within the people that have them.

I have a family member who operates on false pretenses.  Not only does she appear to be something she is not, she convinces people that what she is saying is true.  For instance, we once went to dinner with a highly educated school teacher.  My family member went out of her way to say that she had gotten her degree in teaching, (not true), and had her teaching certificate, (not true).  Are these people bad people?

No, people that have to put on false pretenses are people that are too cowardly to admit their flaws.  Flaws are part of who we are as human beings and we all have them.  Not only do we have them, we should embrace them as they give us character and make us different than other individuals.

People that suffer with having to put on pretenses often suffer with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.  They have a need to make themselves appear greater than they really are.  I didn’t think it was a good quality to be able to admit your weaknesses until I had spent enough time around this family member.  She was so caught up in her own half-truths about herself, she could not appreciate others, who did admit their weaknesses and viewed that as weakness in and of itself.

“People who are rich in Pretense, are often short on humility.”  As this family member has gotten older, she has found less of a need to tout herself up into being something she is not.  She, in all fairness to her, does suffer with alcoholism, and this can be a contributing factor to most types of mental illness.

Pretenses are unnecessary because there is one thing for certain about all of us:  We each share different strengths and weaknesses.  Pretenses are unnecessary when we realize this and can admit fully who we are as individuals, both the positive and negative qualities about each of us.

After all, if we all walked around under the guise of pretenses, that would make us all perfect.  One thing about us human beings?  What makes us different are our imperfections and they are beautiful in their own regard, depending on the perspective your looking at them in.

Thank you for reading about pretenses today.  Have a beautiful and blessed day.
