ARROGANCE VS CONFIDENCE (REPOST)

ARROGANCE VS CONFIDENCE (REPOST)

“There’s a thin line between confidence and arrogance. It’s called humility. Confidence smiles. Arrogance smirks.”
-Unknown

In all my articles for this site, I have always sited confidence as a key factor to get ahead in any endeavor. If you don’t believe in yourself, than nobody else will either.

But as today’s quote says, there’s a thin line between confidence and arrogance. Once you cross that line, that path that you’re on becomes much more dangerous to tread on with a lot more one-way streets.

So how does one know the difference? How does someone keep their head on their shoulders in moments of celebration?

Different steps work for different people but the following two elements have always worked for me. Any time I’ve crossed paths with these elements, the results have always been substandard.

The first is a difference of having two words or not in a sentence. The sentence is “I’m the best at what I do.” To me, that’s an arrogant statement. No matter what you do, there’s always someone better regardless of whether you’ve came across them or not. Even world records are broken every few years.

But add two simple words to that sentence and it immediately switches from arrogance to confidence. Those words are “one of.” When you say “I’m one of the the best at what I do,” you’re displaying your confidence but at the same time, leaving room for the acknowledgement that someone else is better than you.

It’s always a good idea to keep that in mind. If you have an abundance of talent in any field, be proud of it. Express it when necessary. But always remember, it’s not untouchable.

The second element to be wary of is complacency. The minute you feel you have nothing left to prove is when the motivation to keep going forward dies. When that momentum is stopped, the downhill journey can come much faster than you think. To climb up, you need strength, determination and effort. To fall down, all you need the omnipresence of gravity.

Much like the aforementioned first element, be proud of your accomplishments. If you’ve hit certain high marks in your journey, celebrate them. Congratulate yourself and remind your self of those marks during moments of self-doubt. But simultaneously, remind yourself that the number of steps to success are infinite. No matter how high you reach, there’s always a step higher.

To reiterate, different philosophies and strategies work for different people. But for me personally, these two elements have consistently proven to be efficacious in reaching any goal or endeavor. Keep the words “one of” in my thoughts and reminding myself that there’s always one more step to take to get to the finish line.

How do you define the difference between arrogance and confidence? Has the difference ever blurred for you? If not, what did you do personally to keep that from happening? If so, where do you think you went wrong? Share your thoughts and experiences by commenting below on our secure servers.
