Dancing through the forest

DANCING THROUGH THE FOREST

As I lay prostrate, upon the forest floor,
Keeping watch with my night-vision camera,
In the hope of seeing a wild animal or two,

There came, at about a quarter to midnight,
I saw a troupe of ghostly dancers,
Gliding, twirling, dipping, and leaping through the forest.

I followed them, never taking my eyes off the ghostly women,
And the phantom men who partnered each one.
They took me, under the glow of the moon, the twinkling of the stars,
And the bright light of Mars and Venus, across the forest floor,
Under the canopy of leafy branches, and over a bridge, under which a stream ran.

Above me, around me, and below me, animals, birds and insects slept, or went about their business, hunting for prey, looking for a mate, or trying to avoid predators.

But my camera caught none of it that night. Instead, I was, as I still believe now, the only witness to the ghostly people that danced through the forest that night.
