The Way It Should Have Been

by: Laurel A. Porter

The empty porch swing where we never sat
The empty hours spent with just my cat

The summer days I never planted you flowers
The dark of night, and never held you for hours

All the mornings I never kissed you goodbye
And you never said without me, you’d die

The walks we held hands that never occurred
And all the “I need you’s” that you never heard

The times that you never ‘felt it’ too
“Till death do us part”, but not for you

The hardest lesson I ever learned
My “I love you” that was never returned
