Seeking approval from others can be natural but in most cases, seeking one’s approval is a sign of insecurity. Seeking approval from others can be due to the way you were raised as a child: For instance, not receiving enough praise as a child from those in an authoritarian position such as Mom or Dad or anyone even older siblings.
If as a child, you never felt validated, then you are more likely to seek approval as an adult. Approval can only truly be found within ones self. Approving of yourself is very important. It sets the bar of standards that your willing to accept as a person for yourself. With love self-esteem and a low standard for approval, chances are you will end up settling for less than you deserve and less than your capable of.
I know when I look at myself, I had to go get counseling for this issue. Not only did I have a low set of values for myself, I was constantly looking for approval from others to validate who I was as an individual. Much of this had to do with an over critical father and older brother, who judged me harshly when I did not do things up to their standards.
Not receiving that approval as a child, had a drastic affect on my adulthood. I was constantly looking to others to determine my self-worth as an individual. I could not make a decision without asking others I respected if it was the right one. Don’t get me wrong. It is important to get other’s opinions now and then on subjects your making a decision on but are not that familiar with, but there is a fine line between this and looking for self-approval from others.
Approval, because it is a form of validation proves that your confidence level in yourself as an adult is low. This, therefore leaves you from being able to think for yourself, and live with the consequences and actions of your own decisions.
Seeking approval from others on subjects that are unfamiliar to you, is a way of validating ones self and normal to a certain degree when someone in unfamiliar in the background of what this decision is. If you find that for every decision you make, you must seek other’s approval, perhaps counseling is not a bad idea for yourself as well. It was a decision I had to make for myself and this is true for you too. Only you can make a determination between youth and not knowing quite what your doing, and having enough self-confidence to make a decision on your own.
