The gift of a Calamity
_____________________________________
Gee Doc what the hell happen?
It was such a great morning everything was going my way
But boy something went wrong, now I think I should have stayed in bed
I really don’t know where to begin doc
It was such a beautiful spring day as I left home
I wanted to go the market for some groceries
Since it was such a nice day I decided to walk
The supermarket was only a few blocks away
I was only going to buy a few items, so why take the car
It seems like everyone was in a good mood, all smiles as I walked by
But it sure did not last; I was about three blocks from home
As I started across the street, a car ran the light and almost hit me
But as it come towards me a young Boy Scout jump into the street and push me out of the way
I fell to the ground but was not hurt, but when I looked back I saw that the young lad had been hit
The ambulance soon arrived; I think the young man may have broken some bones
Before the ambulance left I thank the young man for saving me, and I hope that he be all right.
Undaunted by what had happen I headed for the store. I soon was captured by the beauty of the day and everyone’s cheerfulness and I had shaken the accident that had occurred
I enter the store and there was the hustle and bustle of people moving about
I had been in the store, I would say about 15 minutes or so when it happen
I had been working my way through the aisles when I came upon the fruit and vegetable section
There was a display of peaches, stack high; It was a sale, and I so love peaches
I got a bag and was gingerly putting some in the bag; when all of a sudden the pile of peaches began to shake and sway
A grocery clerk working next to his fruit and vegetable cart turn and open his arms as if he were go to wrap his arms around the falling peaches, it did not work, in his effort he lost his footing and fell into his cart, knocking the cart over and throwing the boxes of fruit from the cart; one of which hit an elderly lady
This poor lady was just minding her own business as she viewed some prunes when the box hit her in the head knocking her unconscious.
Well the ambulances came for both of them, I think clerk left leg was broken
I quickly paid for my items but I felt a bit unease as the store casher gave me a very hostile look
Boy was I glad to get home doc
I just wanted to curl up in bed pulling the covers over my head for the rest of the day
It was so peaceful for a while then boom, it was like an earthquake then something hit me and the next thing I know I’m waking up in lots of pain and a body cast
Doc I tell you right now I’m feeling pretty pessimistic
Well, said Doctor Thompson I can well understand how you feel Mr. Adams
Its seems you lived a day full of calamity; But in my eyes I think it was a very optimistic day
How so said I with bewildered look, for to me it seem like a very crappy day
I can see your point said Doctor Thompson, but I and Nurse Jones
We can tell you that you are only seeing one side of the story, from our perspective
What happen to you today was nothing short of a miracle; what I said, in a very shock manner
Doctor Thompson said let me explain
We are well aware of everything that transpired today, all those other people were brought to this hospital
Now let me explain why you should look at this very optimistically
That Boy Scout that saved you from the automobile; well first, he will be all right, he had some sore ribs and a broken right arm. But the big thing was during a routine check of his blood we found a very contagious virus that we thought was only down in South America.
Turns out that this young man and his father went to Brazil for an International Boy Scout Jamboree
Thank God we caught it before it could have spread among the populace and that is thanks to you for if you were not in the way of that car that young man, Bobby would not have tried to safe you. Now Bobby and his dad are in isolation.
Ok now for the calamity at the store, again what you think was horrible, in reality a blessing
Both the clerk and the elderly woman were saved by us catching other issues
The store clerk, Billy, who had a broken leg from the accident, had a few days earlier cut the same leg while at work it put a Band-Aid on it and had not check it if he had he would have notice that it was infected and he could have lost his leg if we did not caught it.
Mrs. Mathers, the elderly lady hit by the box in the head, well when they were doing head scan
Found she had developed a bulge in the wall of a blood vessel and she was about to have a fatal aneurysm we saved her in the nick of time
So you see there were those lives you touch and in a way you made a difference
Now about how you got here; here again we have miracle; boy I must say you are a busy man when it comes to miracles
While you thought you were safe in your bed, at that same time a car came around the corner and the driver Mr. Kelly at that exact time suffer a mild heart attack as you know your bed was located near a wall that faces the street
Well Mr. Kelly lost control of the auto and the car headed right for your house and hit that wall sending debris down on you
When they brought both of you in, we found that Mr. Kelly needed open heart surgery, he was just about to have a massive heart attack, thank god we got him when we did and he will be fine
You sir are also very lucky, yes, I understand you suffered a few broken bones from falling debris but when I was operating on you we found that your appendix were about to burst and it might have been fatal, you’re a lucky man that we got to it in time.
Well now that you have seen the other side of the story I hope your pessimism turns to optimism
For with all the calamity that followed you
I got say it’s almost like someone or something was watching over you and all those other people
It’s like you were used to save other, and all those things that happen were to happen to save all of you
Scary isn’t it, I have never seen anything like this, but if I did not believe in God before, I sure do now.
Now, you get some rest and I or one of the nurses well look into see you later.
At that point the doctor and the nurse turn to leave they both took a few steps and were at the door when Doctor Thomson’s turn and looked back with a wildly smile one thing Mr. Adams one last thing when you get better and are up on your feet do me a favor please stay the hell of a way from me
We all broke out in laughter.
