What is compatibility and what does it mean according to our Webster Dictionary?
Let us first take a look at the meaning of compatibility-1. A state in which two things are able to exist or occur together without problems or conflict. 2. a feeling of sympathy and friendship, likemindedness
Daily Wisdom Word Meaning-1. The ability to get along with another individual and be in harmony with them.
How important is compatibility in a relationship? I believe it is very important. Being compatible with another individual generally means you have common interests with them. Being compatible often means sharing common bonds as well.
The following items are items found within a compatible relationship:
- Two people that share common interests such as tennis, or even being stay at home individuals.
- Two people that share the same belief systems such as religious, child bearing, political beliefs
- People that are able to have a genuine compassion for the other person
- Two people in a romantic relationship who are also able to be friends.
- respect for the others interests and beliefs even if you don’t have the same beliefs and interests.
Compatibility exists when two people are cohesive with the same ideas and thought pattern. People who fight a lot tend to have a harder time having the compassion necessary to be compatible with the other individual. We know when we are compatible with another individual. We don’t have to share all of the same common interests, but should be able to come together on important points and ideas and have a similar belief system.
The most compatible relationship I have been fortunate enough to see, would be between my daughter and her husband. One seems to know what the other is thinking before the other one does! These two individuals don’t like all of the same things, but what they do share, they share 110% and they appreciate, respect and are empathetic with each others needs. When you see them around one another, its as if they have some secret unspoken language between the two, and they have an excellent marriage.
I asked my daughter what she thought made them so compatible, and she said they had been together so long, their interests had grown together, whereas relationships that don’t work over a long period of time, tend to grow apart. Even through their silence, they are always communicating non-verbally and communication is the common bond that keeps two people cohesive, I believe.
