What does it mean to be an atheist?  If you read the daily wisdom words blog at all, where I am not shy in my belief system, you know how I believe.  That is not how the whole world believes, however. Many think that having a belief system is important and so do I.  Before we go any further, let us take a look at the meaning of atheism in our Webster Dictionary.

Atheist-A person who disbelieves or lacks . belief in the existence of God or Gods.

Daily Wisdom Word Meaning of Atheist-A person who does not believe in God, and from what I have read, cannot tell you why they believe this way.   The opposite of Atheist is Theist who believe at least one God does exist.

The actual term, atheism emerged in the sixteenth century although the groundwork for this form of belief was laid much earlier in time.  atheism began collecting arguments for atheism with the spread of freethought, skeptical inquiry and the criticism of religion.  The various approaches to atheism range from philosophical to social to historical approaches .  I have had to really educate myself to write this as I wanted to after coming across much hate speech under atheism about God and prayer this weekend on twitter.

The first individuals to identify themselves as atheists, lived in the eighteenth century during the age of enlightenment.  The French Revolution noted  for its unprecedented atheism witnessed the first movement in history to advocate for human reason.  The main argument is we are born without belief in deities (Gods) to begin with.  Atheism may counter anything including Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism and Jainism.   The rationalistic agnosticism of Kant and the Enlightenment only accepts knowledge deduced with human rationality.

One of the biggest arguments atheists have, started with a theory by Epicurus.  Epicurus brings up the problem with evil.  Is God willing to prevent evil but not able?  Is he able, but not willing?  Then he is malevolent.  (I have no choice due to the length this article would be, but to skip over specifics in my research mainly done from the Wikipedia.)

There are metaphysical arguments for atheism or metaphysical atheists.  They may believe either a) an explicit denial of God’s existence associated with all material trends both in ancient and modern times, or b) relative–the implicit denial of God in all philosophies that, while they accept the existence of an absolute, conceive of the absolute.  However, this absolute does not possess any of the attributes of God.

There is so much more we can cover in history as to how atheism came to be, but it is still based on the human belief system which, in my book is and remains imperfect.  I wish I could write an article long enough to give you more facts, but can only write what stands out to me.  Atheists have argued you cannot know a God or prove of the existence of a God.  The latter is called agnosticism.

There are also the logical arguments that atheists have.  One of these is the deductive argument of the existence of God, which assert that the use of terms such as God, Ethos, “the creator” don’t make sense.

I must tell you after reading all of this, that there are many people in this world, (for example, China or claim 61% of its population are atheists.)  I believe religion and God to be two separate entities.  I believe in God, due to my faith.  Okay, folks, find me definitions of faith that prove the existence of God.  You will not find them, I will prewarn you.  Faith is belief in the unseen, the beauty of nature which God created, the explanations we don’t need the answers for, because we have, “faith in our belief in God”.  I look at the first 500 words of this post, with all the examples I have given for atheism, and now that I am going into the reasons to believe in God, it is more simple.  If you are faithless, you have a hard time believing in the things that are meaningful.

I realize I am supposed to be more objective and have tried very hard this morning while studying and writing this, to open my mind.  I also give you this to chew on as I am in the FOR GOD category.  There is evil and hate in this world, sickness and poverty, but God did give us a perfect world to start, and also gave us the power of free will or choice.  We have taken the world, and “created” these horrible, cruel things.

I ask you, if your agnostic, or atheist to look at the miracles we see that are unexplained, like the magic in a child’s eyes at Christmas.  I suggest to you, that you will have one level, unfortunately for you, the highest level of feeling you will never experience due to your belief that human creations and explanations make the most sense.

Next, I offer you the Bible.  You can prove, piece by piece the history of it.  Interestingly enough, although the Bible consists of many chapters, written by many different prophets, the timelines of these prophets fit together perfectly from one visionary to another.  Each chapter, or testaments, written in different time periods overlap each other conveying the prediction of certain events, despite a different prophet at a different time frame writing these facts .

It is confusing, viewing the Bible with the old testament, and how things were, as to how things are.  I ask you to simply keep an open mind, and focus on the new testament and try to read it.  If it does not resonate with you, consider going to church where they break down around 10 verses at a time, to help you read it.

Atheism is a belief system.  As I said above, God gives us the power of free choice and this means having the right to believe as each of us wishes.
