PROBABILITIES
What are probabilities? How do they play a role in our lives? Let us first take a look at the meaning of probabilities from the Webster Dictionary.
Probabilities: 1. The extent to which something is probable; The likelihood of something is probable; The likelihood of something happening or being the case. 2. a probable or the most probable event 3. The extent to which an event is likely to occur, measured by the ratio of the favorable cases to the whole number of cases possible
Daily Wisdom Word Definition of Probabilities: 1. The way in which we weigh our decisions as nothing in life is guaranteed.
Life, other than taxes and death has no guarantees, so we base most of our decisions on probabilities if we are not big risk takers. There are some of us that have the personality of a risk taker, so probabilities are not important to us, but if your like me, you weigh the pros and cons of all decisions and go with the one with the most favorable odds or probabilities.
How we determine probabilities is based on our own personal, unique situations. What is important to us, is part of how we formulate our questions we ask ourselves to determine the probability of some negative or positive consequence happening.
I know with me, I have a hard time making any major decision so I will create what is called a T chart, putting the positives of a decision on one side and the negatives of a decision on the other making sure to put it in writing using one side of the T for the positive reasons for a decision to go one way, and the other side of the T for the negative sides of the decision. After weighing both sides, depending on the side that is the most favorable, I use that side to make my decision.
No matter how well you calculate probabilities, life has a tendency to throw you some curveballs, so there is never any guarantees that your decisions will be the right ones even after calculating the probabilities. Sometimes, you simply have to go with your gut feeling using intuition and instinct to direct and guide you.
