What does it mean to be an “ambivert”? Until just recently, I had never heard this word, I am embarrassed to say. However, now that I know what it means, I realize it applies to me. Ambiverts have both sides to them. They are both extroverts and introverts depending on what situation and mood they are in. To be an ambivert, is slightly uncommon. Most personalities are categorized as either an introvert or an extrovert. Let us take a look at the exact definition of an ambivert in our Webster Dictionary and our daily wisdom words definition.
Webster definition of ambivert-a person whose personality has a balance of extrovert and introvert features.
Daily Wisdom Words definition- A person who can be in social situations and be completely comfortable, or they can be alone, and enjoy it.
Ambiverts have a distinct advantage over extroverts and introverts. How does an ambiverts brain work? Because their personality does not lean in a particular direction, they have an easier time adjusting and engaging appropriately to any social situation.
I would like to propose a question to you and it is one question I tried to answer but did so incorrectly, although it was my career for 25 years. Who do you think makes a better salesperson? Would you answer: 1. introvert, 2. extrovert, 3. ambivert? My answer was an extrovert. Adam Grant of Wharton set out to study this phenomenon. He was able to prove that extroverts were NOT the best salespeople calling the brain’s behavior introversion and extraversion. The answer to the question is an ambivert. They achieve greater sales productivity than introverts and extraverts do. Ambiverts are able to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm to persuade and close a sale. Having the ability to listen, is part of what makes an incredible salesperson. Ambiverts can exert themselves enough, but gauge when to back off and listen to a customer’s needs as well. This makes an exceptional salesperson.
One out of nine people work in the sales industry so Grant’s research as well as psychologists interest in general disproved the common philosophy that extroverts were better salespeople. What do you believe yourself to be? As with any personality, all are unique. However, I think it’s fair to say that if you are not one extreme or the other, you fall in the middle which places your personality into the ambivert category.
