GIVING THE FINGER(S)

“Just because you can’t see the complete picture, it doesn’t mean it is not there.” -Nara Lee
What can you do with your fingers? Grip something? Wiggle them? Flip someone off? There is one more thing you can do that is not always a common answer from most people: Create positive energy. Our fingers and thumbs are all connected, through energy, to various organs and emotions of our bodies. On paper, perhaps conversations about such topics lead one to associate them with spiritual healers and new age supplements. On the contrary, there is a strong scientific correlation as well. In 2018, The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center conducted an experiment in which they encouraged several cancer patients to practice Jin Shin Jyutsu. Jin Shin Jyutsu is an old Japanese healing technique in which a person channels positive mental energy by placing his or her fingers in a specific position. The results were pleasantly surprising. Most of the patients that tried it were reported as receiving “statistically significant improvement” regarding stress and pain levels. Following that experiment, other medical facilities tried similar attempts which resulted in positive outcomes. So how exactly does Jin Shin Jyutsu and other healing techniques involve utilizing our fingers work? Basically, all such techniques stem from these basic connections that our fingers and thumbs have. All of these were researched and reported by entrepreneur and writer Michael Prywes for an article on lifehack.org.
  • Our thumbs are connected to the spleen and the stomach. As a result, holding the thumb can increase the number of blood cells, both red and white. Given the right amount of pressure, squeezing the thumb can also relieve some stress.
  • The index finger is connected to the kidney and bladder which balances our water levels and body chemistry. Hence, holding or squeezing it can improve levels of vitality.
  • Not surprisingly, the middle finger has the potential release anger. The origins of flipping someone off stem from the fact that utilizing the energy of the middle finger when angry prevents from an excess of blood flow to the head (which happens when you’re angry or extremely stressed). It’s also connected to the liver and gall bladder.
  • The ring finger is connected to muscles and the nervous system.
  • The pinkie finger is connected to the heart and its blood flow.
  • The palm is connected to the diaphragm and umbilicus.
With the above information, when you take a little bit of time everyday to touch all your fingers together in various positions and breathe deeply, the potential to a healthier state of mind and body increases significantly (as proven by the experiments alluded to in this article). Have you ever given much thought to your fingers and what functionality they have? Are you personally open to trying similar techniques suggested in this article? Why or why not?
