Opposites Attract

Would the world be a better place if everyone thought and felt the same way? Given the adverse behavior towards the political landscape today, one might be tempted to think so. But it wouldn’t. It’s the differences, both positive and negative, in people we interact with that help us grow and evolve. Positive differences inspire us to become better people. Negative differences provide us motivation to move forward individually without help. For example, the greatest inventions in technology be it electricity, automobiles or various modes of communication, would have never seen the light of day had it not been for somone challenging the status quo. It took various inventors thinking differently then the norm to offer ideas that changed the world. Various laws and ordinances came to be after negative consequences. Differences also let us see circumstances from a different point of view and make us more sympathetic and in some cases, even more empathetic. The advent of organizations like Red Cross and homeless shelters came about when certain people took the time to see how the “other half” live and wondered what could be done to help them. Even attraction wise, experts argue that opposites attract because subconciously we like to be around people that “complete” us and bring forth a balanced life. In doing so, partners offer each other worlds that they otherwise may never be privy to. If anything makes us allergic to different perspectives today, it’s probably the current political landscape that’s left people more polarized than ever before. Then again, it could be argued that the lack of a proper balance in opinions is what’s creating the tension in the first place. An open dialogue from all sides, instead of an all-out verbal massacre, might lead to change that everyone is at least content with, if not completely happy. How do you feel about differences?
