SPREADING SELFISHNESS

“Spread love wherever you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” -Mother Teresa
Is the act of giving selfish? Psychologists certainly think so. They’ve argued for decades that any act we do, for ourselves or others, is selfish in some shape or form. Some have suggested that this is because deep in our subconscious lies a certain vanity when our assistance, psychological or physical, contributes to someone’s progress. We may not even realize it, especially if we help people habitually. For those that don’t feel this on a conscious level, I would say keep doing what you’re doing. But if indeed you’ve ever felt watching someone’s growth that I was responsible for that, I would say embrace that feeling. As long as those kind of thoughts don’t rise above the surface, you’re fine, especially if they inspire you to keep helping people. And then there are people who are completely on the opposite end of the spectrum, those that only think about themselves even on a conscious level. If you’re one of them, think about the ideas and philosophies expressed in this post and go with them. What it boils down to is helping others no matter which way you feel. If you’re consciously selfish, know that helping others will increase your own selfworth. If you’re subconciously selfish, know that helping others will make you feel good somewhere down the line. And if you’re not the least bit selfish, continue being yourself. As long as the other person benefits. How do you feel about helping orhers? Do you do it for your own Karma or theirs or both? I think that we have to be careful that we are not using our β€œcharity” to manipulate others to meet our needs. That’s like being the a wolf in sheep’s clothing. We have to watch our motives if we expect to get brownie points in heaven.
