CHRISTMAS/HISTORY OF ITS MEANING

What is the actual definition of Christmas?  Why do we celebrate it?  It may surprise you to know that Christmas isn’t centered around a decorated tree or presents.  The purpose of this post is to talk about the meaning of Christmas, its history and some of the traditions that go with it.  .  Before going any further, let us take a look at the definition of Christmas.

Christmas-1.  An annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25th as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.

Daily Wisdom Word Meaning of Christmas-1.  Annual holiday celebrated on December 25th celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.  Some people believe, because Jesus Christ was God’s gift to the world, the celebration that sins are  forgiven for those that believe in him.

The closest traditions that followed were archives of the nativity scene and today, many of us still follow this one tradition.

How did Christmas start?  Christmas started long ago when the Europeans began honoring the solstice.  In the early years of Christianity,  Easter was the main holiday;  The birth of Jesus was not celebrated.  In the fourth century, church officials decided to institute the birth of Jesus as a holiday.  Unfortunately, the bible does don’t mention a date for Jesus Christ’s Birth.  (A fact later pointed out by Puritans).  Pope Julius 1, decided to designate December 25th to celebrate Jesus Christs birth.  Bh the end go the thirteenth century, the celebration of  Christmas had spread all the way to Scandinavia.  Today, In the Greek and Russian orthodox churches Christians is celebrated 13 to 14 days after December 25th.  This is because Western Churches use the  Gregorian Calendar, while Eastern Churches use the Julian calendar, which is 13 to 14 days behind the Gregorian Calendar.  Both churches celebrate Kings day 12 days after their own respective Christmases.  This is the day it is believed that the three wise men found Jesus in the manger.

Christianity, came to be early on.  By the Middle Ages, Christianity had replaced most pagan religions.  On Christmas, believers attended church than celebrate getting drunk, kind of like today’s Mardi Gras.  Each year, the poor would go to the houses of the rich and demand their best food and drink.  When Christmas was carried over to the United States in 1620, The celebration of Christmas was actually outlawed in Boston.  Anyone exhibiting the spirit of Christmas was fined five shillings.  By contrast, in the Jamestown settlement Christmas was enjoyed by all and celebrated without incident.  After the American Revolution, English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas.  In fact, Christmas was not declared a federal holiday until June 26th, 1870.  It was not until the 19th century that Americans began to embrace Christmas. Americans re-invented Christmas and changed it from a carnival holiday to a family holiday of peace and nostalgia.  In the

This is just one article we will be publishing about Christmas.  The history of Christmas has had a wild ride, from the meaning of it, to the way it was celebrated in the past and now, today.  Thanks so much for reading about Christmas.  God bless you all.

HOLIDAY BY MADONNA

LYRICS

Holiday
Celebrate
Holiday
Celebrate
If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be, it would be so nice
Everybody spread the word
We’re gonna have a celebration
All across the world
In every nation
It’s time for the good times
Forget about the bad times, oh yeah
One day to come together to release the pressure
We need a holiday
If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate (come on, let’s celebrate)
Just one day out of life (holiday)
It would be, it would be so nice
You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It’s time to celebrate
Let love shine
And we will find
A way to come together, we can make things better
We need a holiday
If we took a holiday (holiday)
Took some time to celebrate (celebrate)
Just one day out of life (just one day)
It would be, it would be so nice
Holiday
Celebrate
Holiday
Celebrate
If we took a holiday (oh yeah, oh yeah)
Took some time to celebrate (come on, let’s celebrate)
Just one day out of life (holiday)
It would be, it would be so nice
Holiday (ooh yeah, ooh yeah)
Celebrate (come on, let’s celebrate)
Holiday (just one day out of life)
Celebrate
