PRODUCTIVITY-HOW DO WE MOTIVATE OURSELVES WHEN DEPRESSED?

How do maintain productivity?  What can we do to become motivated when our mood is sad or low?  I recently have posed this question to myself.  It is more difficult by far to get things done when we are depressed.  I am dealing with the grief of my little sister being ill without a cure, and the sadness that surrounds my family like a black cloud hanging over me.  My sister has a tumor directly on the voice box of her neck, and she can’t talk.  If I ever felt down, really down, it would be her I would call.  Although she is three years younger, she was able to give some of the best advice and did so with patience.

These feelings I am having keep me from feeling very motivated to do things.  I know, however, the first step to getting out of this black cloud is to become productive.  It is proving to be more challenging to me to do so due to the circumstances with my sister.  I find with my own depression being motivated with productivity extremely difficult.  Let us take a look at the definition of productivity in our Webster Dictionary.

Productivity-The rate of production through new biomass by an individual, population, or community.

Daily Wisdom Word definition of productivity-being motivated to get done what is necessary with responsibilities in our lives.  Being able to exceed these expectations.

The following are suggestions to be productive when down.  1.  take one small step towards a small goal.  This will lead to additional steps and small successes.  2.  make a list each morning of things you feel you can get done.  3.  Don’t put too much pressure on yourself when you don’t succeed with your list.  4.  Take a small nap.  This can change your entire mood.  5.  take care of yourself physically.  6.  talk to a friend.  7.  reach out to a counselor or social worker for additional help.  7.  Should this kind of depression last a long time, perhaps it is time to consider medication, even on a temporary basis.

WILLPOWER

How important is having willpower?  What does willpower say about one’s success in life?  Willpower is what determines if we are a driven individual able to restrain from things that are unhealthy or not beneficial to our lives.  Before going any further, let’s take a look at the definition of willpower in our Webster Dictionary and the Daily Wisdom Word Meaning.

Willpower-Control exerted to do something or restrain impulses.

Daily Wisdom Definition of willpower-The ability to resist temptations and push forward with things that show long term gratification.

It is hard to maintain self-control over every temptation in our life.  When I was younger, fulfilling a career, raising children and working out every day, seemed to have more to motivate me to having more willpower.  I think our amount of willpower can sometimes be related to the long-term gratification we get, and how important something is to us.

Having strong willpower when there is long term gratification, but it is being done for yourself, says a lot about our character.  It is not easy to resist certain things in life.  Ironically, most of the things we find ourselves getting tempted with are things that provide immediate gratification.

There is a book called, “Willpower-rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength” by Psychologist Roy F. Baumeister & John Tierney.  This book made it to the New York Times bestseller list and is a popular book as of today.  When you read this book, you will understand much more how far willpower can take you.

True athletes are made, not born.  They can have all the talent in the world, but without willpower, they cannot be self-disciplined enough to be successful.  This is how important a role willpower can play in ones life.  I believe it is the key to success and failure. A Lack of interest and having interests.  I have lived my life both ways, and am now overweight when, until now, without the restraint I once trained myself to have, I am overweight.  I feel willpower has everything to do with that.  I find myself thinking about doing things and telling myself I will do them, expending energy on the thought of doing it, rather than actually doing it.

It is amazing also, what willpower has to do with time management.  I watch my daughter, very much like me when I was her age, and she finds time to run her dog, run herself, work out on her lunch break, be an amazing mother, because of tenacity and willpower.  Think about where your at in life, and ask yourself how much of a role willpower is playing in taking you where you want to be.  Nothing in life is for free.  However, the formula to getting what we want, is not rocket science.

How important do you feel willpower is?  How much of a role has it played in your life?  Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where it says, “Join the discussion”  and leave a comment about willpower, write a poem about it, or create/write down a famous quote about willpower.  You will be amazed at how power-ful WILL can be.
