SOCIAL MEDIA – EVIL OR GOOD?

SOCIAL MEDIA – EVIL OR GOOD?

“We don’t have a choice whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it.”
-Eric Qualman

Is social media a significant root of evil? Have we succumbed to it to a point of being a genuine hazard?

If you look at the number of suicides among young people due to cyber bullying lately, you might be tempted to believe that social media is indeed a dangerous platform that leads to nothing but mental anguish in the long run.

If you analyze the number of people who were victims in online scams that turned sour, again, you’ll probably lean towards a resounding “yes” to the question above.

I, however, have a different opinion. I do not acknowledge social media itself to be the actual cause of any negative situations.

Rather, I think it’s a lack if social media etiquette that’s inviting trouble.

Like any other technology, social media is a platform(s) that should be utilized for our advantage.

Unfortunately, that’s not true with the majority of the people utilizing it.
Instead of using it to promote and spread awareness of our brand, our sites and our individual talents, it’s became a constant competition for attention.

People no longer care what they’re posting as long as it gets a certain number of views and likes.

Granted, to promote a business, numbers are important. But we should always remember that those numbers should work for us and not the other way around.

Speaking personally, I would never have had the chance to write for this website had it not been for the appropriate social media interactions with various people. I would have not been a published writer had it not been being a part of the online writing community.

But then I was and still am very careful of how I conduct myself on social media and who I interact with on a daily basis.

While I certainly appreciate a huge number of likes as much as anybody else, I certainly don’t disregard everything else for it.

Social media in and of itself can be very beneficial. But it’s up to you to utilize it for a specific goal or just to get some attention.

How do you feel overall about social media? Do you think it does more harm than good or vice versa? Does it depend on the platform or the individuals using the platforms?
