How do misunderstandings occur? Misunderstandings usually occur due to a breakdown in communication.
Let us first take a look at the meaning of misunderstandings before we go further into why they occur in our Webster Dictionary.
Misunderstandings-1. a failure to understand something correctly. 2. a disagreement or quarrel.
Daily Wisdom Word meaning of misunderstandings-1. a breakdown in communication resulting in an argument or debate.
Misunderstandings can be difficult because both parties are generally responsible for them. One person says something in an unclear manner and it is misunderstood by the other person. This makes misunderstandings difficult to resolve, and we all have them at some point in our lives.
We all know that when a misunderstanding occurs, it is common to blame the other party. However, this is not the way to get past a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding is best resolved with what is called, “I” messages, and I am not referring to instant messaging! I am referring to open, honest communication in an adult fashion using I messages to resolve the misunderstanding.
I messages are statements taking accountability for our feelings. For example, let us say that the disagreement involves misunderstanding what the other party was trying to communicate to us. If we let the other party know how we are feeling, we need to use “I” messages to make our point. The best way to start an “I” message is with, “I feel”. “When you tell me you don’t like my cooking, “I feel” hurt and unappreciated by your comment. Then the other party will not receive your information feeling they are to blame because your taking accountability for your own feelings.
“I feel” is a great way to resolve misunderstandings because we are talking from an adult standpoint to one another. We get much closer to resolving the problem when we are speaking as adults to one another. Children yell and scream. Adults, in order to be one, have learned to control their emotions enough to speak from a calm demeanor.
This is just one example of how to clear up misunderstandings. Another important thing to remember, is just because you are ready to talk about the misunderstanding, does not mean the other party is. This means choosing the appropriate time to discuss the misunderstanding for both parties to communicate effectively.
Another important suggestion is to remember to compromise with the other party and acknowledge what they have said.
