Many authors don’t want to write by their own name, for security purposes, privacy and safety. They are called “ghost writers” and they write under an alternate identity. Pseudonyms can also be used in order to change your name. You may not be comfortable with the name you have, and many actresses also change their name.
Marilyn Monroe was a pseudonym for Norma Jeane Mortenson. Her agent actually changed her name to a pseudonym to make her more marketable to the public. Many actresses have done this.
A pseudonym is also referred to as a pen name. This is the name one uses when writing they would prefer to be known by. My mother was a songwriter for many years, and she used a pseudonym for safety purposes and concealment of her identity. She simply wasn’t comfortable with her given name and all the potential publicity using her given name could potentially cause her.
She was shy, and in some ways ashamed of her writing. All of us in the family write, except for my older sister and brother, and I prefer to use my given name to write by. I am here to share stories about myself in hopes of helping others, and using a pseudonym, would defeat that purpose.
