FOLLOWING YOUR INNER FASHION STATEMENT

“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.” -Lao Tzu
We all are swayed by it at one point or another. We all have, at least once, been allured by it, many times at a high cost. I’m talking about fashion. I’ve always been fascinated (and even mildly amused) by my friends who spent an exorbitant amount of money on something that’s “trending.” Even though on a practical level, it doesn’t always contribute much. I’m particularly reminded of an incident from several years ago when I was visiting my cousin in New York. We were all set for a typical day out: lunch, shopping, a movie and dinner. As I was getting dressed, I heard my cousin moan and groan a little. I looked at her to see what the issue was and couldn’t help but give a sly smile. My cousin was putting on some tight high heels that were obviously uncomfortable. The shoes looked great, no doubt. But were they worth the price of pain and sore legs? For all the compliments we get for our attire and/or accessories, is it worth it of we don’t feel good inside? Don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not against looking good. It’s even been scientifically proven that when we look good, we feel more confident. What I’m questioning is what exactly does “looking good” mean? Part of it is definitely wearing the colors and shapes that suit your body. But another part that to me is equally important is attire that suits your mind. If wearing a pair of Ray-Bans or holding a Gucci purse genuinely improves your confidence, have at it. Beauty after all, is subjective as I’ve said countless times. But if you’re utilizing name-brand products simply to impress others or a serious case of #FOMO, it’s time to reevaluate your fashion sense. True fashion begins with from within. Wear what makes your heart happy which in turn will radiate outside. Because external beauty will wear out. Your hair does not magically stay combed all the time and make-up cannot stay on 24/7. But the path from your inner joy to outer radiance can be called upon at any hour of the day without the necessity of a mirror. What does fashion mean to you? Is it more internal or external? Or perhaps a bit of both? Do you agree or disagree with need for inner fashion? Why or why not? Share your thoughts and experiences by commenting below on our secure servers.
