RIPPLING

OUR DAILY WISDOM WORD TODAY IS “RIPPLING”.  I CHOSE THIS WORD BECAUSE IT BEST DESCRIBES WHAT HAPPENS when we make a negative decision or choice which always has a consequence.  From this consequence, rippling or the “rippling effect” happens.  The “rippling effect” as I call this, are unintended consequences to others not involved in the choice we made.  This choice not only ripples, it bleeds over to those who we never meant to hurt.  Rippling is the indirect effect of these poor choices.  Let us start off with the definition of rippling from the Webster Dictionary and our Daily Wisdom Word Definition.

Webster Dictionary of Rippling-1.  A small wave of series of waves on the surface of water.  2.  A particular feeling or effect that spreads through someone or movement

Daily Wisdom Word Definition- 1. Waves of  unintended movement with direct and indirect consequences.

Choices or consequences are the reasons we have the “rippling effect”.  When we make a decision or choice we don’t think through, others get hurt.  We think only of direct consequences when making a decision.  Ripples are always a part of our choice.  For example, you are a “manager” and must let go of an employee.  The employee directly feels the consequence of our choice.  His family with a wife and two children are affected from the employee’s job loss when indirectly, the money supporting them is no longer there.  These consequences, direct and indirect, are a result of our choice made to lay off the employee.

When we make choices there are almost always, ripples.  This is why I suggest we think through our choices carefully.  Sometimes, choices we make are emotional ones such as ending a relationship.  We know this is a good choice for us because the relationship is toxic.  This choice also has ripples, but they are positive ones.  We are finally out of this abusive relationship our loved ones and friends want us to get out of.  The ripples are positive in this case.  We are happier, when interacting with those we care about.  Their responses and grateful feelings for us are the “ripples” with our choice.

We vote and have an election.  Many of us feel the election was rigged because of the choices the President is making. These choices he makes affect all of us directly and indirectly during the last sixty days he is in office.  He has made the choice to fight this loss for him in the election.  He begins to make negative decisions which affect us all with ripples and consequences. In this case, these consequences are intended.  Sometimes, we think through our choices, but due to bitterness and hatred, these choices have terrible consequences which can backfire and affect us harshly.  The consequences of any choice are experienced with us through the “rippling effect”.  Some of us don’t agree with his choices, and there will be direct consequences that will be negative for himself in the end.

All Presidents leave behind a legacy.  This legacy will not be remembered by most as a positive legacy because of his choices.  These choices  affect all of us directly and indirectly.  Some of us think the election was “rigged”.  Some of us feel strongly our President is making the worst decisions he could which affect all of us. These are huge ripples which unfortunately have negative, potentially devastating consequences for all of us,  (The Rippling Effect).

The consequences of our choices are long-term and we should always evaluate these choices carefully.  Impulsive decisions or choices lead to a huge “rippling effect”.  Let us evaluate the consequences for ourselves and others prior to making any choice.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT IS A LEADER?  A LEADER CAN BE ANYONE WHO HEADS UP A TEAM, ADMINISTRATION, GROUP OR ANYONE WHO SETS AN EXAMPLE.  When you are a leader with leadership responsibilities you are the one who sets the example for whoever you are guiding.  We have leaders who set examples that may be right or wrong.  Leaders in my opinion, have a responsibility to be a good role model for whoever they are leading.  Leaders of countries are examples our younger generation looks at for guidance, morals, values, decisions they make, and thoughts on the issues that the leader represents.

If we don’t represent positive leadership, we should not be a leader.  There are groups in the world sadly that wish to represent violence.  For example, Osama Bin Laden who chanted over and over in propaganda videos “death to America”.  What did the children who saw him as their leader do?  They prepared themselves armed and operational even at 5 years old.  They hated America as well.  How sad it was to see a child 13 to 15 years old following the leadership they have been taught,  strapped with a bomb.  These children are taught to think they will be doing Allah’s work.  They will be seen in paradise as making the ultimate sacrifice.  Where did they learn this thought process?  From leadership the Leader taught and followed set himself.  They followed his guidance, ultimately with their life.

A great leader has leadership examples that are positive and exemplary.  When we Parent we are leaders.  When we direct our children with guidance, often words are not always followed.  It is a proven fact, that our example as a leader is followed not only with our words, but actions.  Great examples of leadership and guidance are beliefs we follow ourselves.  A great leader needs to follow his own leadership example.  It means so little to children what we say.  When ew exhibit a leadership role, whomever we lead will look to us for leadership by our actions and examples.  I learned this lesson as a parent “after” my children were grown.  I hope my advice is taken by parents who are actively leading children now.  Our judgement as a leader for our children should be well thought out with each decision we make.  We also need to be prepared to follow through with our own actions because we have a responsibility as a leader.

Webster Definition of leadership-1.  The position and function of a leader.  2.  ability to lead 3.  an act or instance of leading guidance and direction.

Daily Wisdom Word Definition of leadership-1.  Leading through our actions.  Taking a stand and understanding the responsibilities to be a leader.

Being a leader is a compliment when our leadership is admirable.  All leadership of any kind is followed through with character and actions we are teaching. We are all leaders at some point, and our leadership skills set examples for those we lead.  Leadership is shown through our actions and words.  We all can be a positive role model and live by the actions our leadership will stand for.  This applies to work ethics, and leadership of any kind. Leadership is shown by the examples we set.

Predicting the Future

“The best way to create the future is to create it.”

-Abraham Lincoln

Can we really predict the future?

Self-help gurus always say you can by your actions. They often state that by doing the right thing today, you a have a better tomorrow.

But advice like that is obviously more on an ambitious level than a practical one.

You could be a model driver. You could stay within the speed limit, put on your seatbelt and never run a red light. But a drunk driver could still hit your car.

Even Abraham Lincoln, who said today’s quote, obviously had no way of predicting his assassination.

So what do we do?

In my opinion, you can’t control the outcome. But you can control the probability if you accept that certain things are in your control while others are not.

If you have test coming up, studying hard will put the probability in your favor. It won’t guarantee an A+ but it will guarantee a chance to pass.

If you enter a raffle, you may or may not win. But by entering it, there’s always a chance.

You can’t control the future. But if you do your part, you can certainly increases your chances of being happier.

Outlook Vs. Reality

“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

-Theodore Roosevelt

I’ve always believed that our outlook on the occurrences in life, both good and bad, can determine our future in significant ways.

If something bad happens and we learn from it, we can decrease the chances of it happening again.

Many have argued otherwise, stating that certain things like death, natural disasters, etc are out of our hands.

And while that is true, there is some science behind having a positive outlook.

When you approach a problem thinking, “This sucks, but it already happened. So how can I soften the blow?” you’re more likely to think of a solution than in a state of constant anger or disappointment.

To specify, I don’t mean to say don’t get upset or angry. That’s natural and shouldn’t be suppressed.

But it doesn’t hurt to couple that anger with the thought process of possible solutions.

You may not be able to smile right then and there. But you can certainly pave the road to that smile.

As Charles R. Swindoll believed, life is 10% action and 90% reaction.

Destiny

“We determine our destiny by the actions we take today.”

-Catherine Pulsifer

Since the start of humanity, there has always been a debate about how much control do we have in our lives over our future?

Many have said that fate and destiny cannot be changed no matter what we do.

For example, you could be the safest driver on the road. But a drunk driver or someone running a red traffic light could still hurt you.

Of course, that begs the question that if everything is pre-written for us, what exactly is our role?

I think it’s our actions before and reactions after.

There are things that are out of our control. Perhaps you’ve underestimated how difficult a college exam is.

But you can still go the extra mile and study harder regardless of how easy or hard you think it’ll be so you’re prepared either way.

We cannot control the universe. But the lens size of the telescope we view it through is completely our choice.
