SAVING AND FUTURE

Hi,

My name is Abuh Monday Eneojo and I’d love to have a good life tomorrow. Hence the need to cut off some things and save the little I get for the future. Like me I know you’re doing the same thing just so you can live luxuriously.

I need not tell you the importance of saving money especially in this dispensation. So, if you find your child or friend spending too much teach him/her the art of saving.

Yes, that’s what we’ll talk about today, Saving and future, on Daily Wisdom Words Picture Writing Exercise.

OUTSMARTING PROCRASTINATION

“Procrastination is the thief of time.”
-Edward Young

You do it. I do it. We all do it at some point in our lives. Some may do it more than others. But the devil called procrastination has visited all of us at least once and usually, multiple times through various trials and tribulations.

How do we combat it?

UNKNOWNS

OUR DAILY WISDOM WORD IS “UNKNOWNS”.   I CHOSE THIS WORD BECAUSE IT IS THE ONE THING WE CAN’T OR DON’T CALCULATE WHEN WE PLAN FOR LIFE STRATEGIES.  THERE ARE MANY UNKNOWNS, LEADING ME TO BELIEVE THAT WE AREN’T IN CONTROL OF AS MUCH AS WE LIKE TO THINK.  THERE IS PLANNING THAT LAYS OUT MANY VARIABLES ACCOUNTING FOR THE UNKNOWN.

HOWEVER, WE SIMPLY CAN’T PLAN OUR LIFE DOWN TO EVERY ANGLE.  IF WE TAKE UNKNOWNS A STEP FURTHER, WITHOUT THEM, IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO GROW AS INDIVIDUALS.  BEING PREPARED FOR CURVEBALLS IS PARTLY WHAT MAKES LIFE INTERESTING.  THESE CURVEBALLS OR UNKNOWNS IN LIFE ARE WHAT WE HAVE TO BE EMOTIONALLY PREPARED FOR.   THERE IS NOT ONLY THE UNSEEN, BUT THE UNFORESEEN.

MANY THINGS GO ON AROUND US WE COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE AWARE OF.  THERE ARE SIMPLY TOO MANY MOVING PARTS IN LIFE INCLUDING WHAT DECISIONS ARE MADE WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY INVOLVED IN EVENTS IN LIFE.  WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I USED TO BELIEVE THAT I WAS IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING.

I THINK WE ALL SHOULD PLAN FOR LIFE, AND ANY GOAL WE WISH TO ACHIEVE.  I WAS FORCED HOWEVER, WHEN I WAS 30 YEARS OLD, TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT MY SUMMATIONS ON LIFE WHEN A CAR HIT ME AT AN INTERSECTION WHILE I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN AT 50 MILES PER HOUR.

THIS EVENT SHOWED ME WE AREN’T IN CONTROL OF ALL OF LIFE’S EVENTS.  BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER, LET US TAKE A LOOK AT THE MEANING OF THE WORD, UNKNOWN IN OUR WEBSTER DICTIONARY AND THE DAILY WISDOM WORD DEFINITION.

WEBSTER DEFINITION FOR THE MEANING OF UNKNOWN-AN UNKNOWN QUANTITY OR VARIABLE.   THAT WHICH IS UNKNOWN.

DAILY WISDOM WORD MEANING-THE THINGS WE CANNOT PLAN FOR THAT SIMPLY HAPPEN IN LIFE.

I KNOW WHEN I THINK OF THE WORD “UNKNOWNS”,  I AM DEALING WITH THAT PART OF REALITY THAT IS PART OF IT THAT WE CAN’T ANTICIPATE.  WHAT HAVE YOU HAD HAPPEN TO YOU THAT WAS AN UNKNOWN?  HOW DID YOU COPE OR HANDLE IT?  UNKNOWNS ARE OFTEN THE ONE THING THAT CREATES A SIDE OF US WHICH BELIEVE IN FATE OR DESTINY AND YES, GOD.

I DO BELIEVE THAT GOD HOLDS AND HANDLES THE “MASTER PLAN”.  THE MASTER PLAN TO ME IS THE PLAN THAT IS PLAYING OUT IN ALL THE UNSEEN THINGS WE CAN’T ANTICIPATE.  THERE ARE GOOD AND BAD THINGS THAT WHEN WE THINK OF THE UNKNOWNS.  PERHAPS WE GET MONEY WE WERE NOT EXPECTING WE ARE DESPERATELY IN NEED OF.

PERHAPS WE LOSE SOMEONE TO DEATH WE WERE NOT EXPECTING AND MUST LIVE WITH THIS GRIEF.  THERE IS ONE THING POSITIVE THAT COMES OVER A LIFETIME FROM UNKNOWNS.  WE GROW EMOTIONALLY.  DESPITE THIS, IT CAN BE PAINFUL, JOYFUL, SURPRISING, EMOTIONAL, SAD, HAPPY, EXCITING, AND OVERWHELMING WHEN AN UNKNOWN HAPPENS.

WITHOUT THE UNKNOWN, WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GROW EMOTIONALLY AS HUMAN BEINGS.  THIS WOULD BE THE SADDEST PLAN OF ALL FROM MY PERSPECTIVE.  THANK YOU FOR READING TODAY.  WANT TO JOIN THE DISCUSSION?  BELOW THIS POST IS JUST THE PLACE TO START OR JOIN IN A DISCUSSION.

ASSUMING MAKES AN A*S…(REPOST)

“Before you ‘assume’, try this crazy method called asking.”
-Unknown

The year is 2000. I’m in high school. The bell has rung and I’m about to go from choir class to Spanish class. Spanish class has two textbooks which my teacher, Mr. Brown, uses interchangeably. Unfortunately, I’m not sure which one is needed for that particular day. Perhaps Mr. Brown had mentioned it the day before and perhaps he hadn’t. I can’t remember.

PATIENCE – REVISITED

“Patience is not passive, on the contrary, it is concentrated strength.”
-Bruce Lee

How hard or easy is it to have patience?

For me personally, it’s one of the most difficult acts to do. Whether it’s waiting for a package delivery or sitting at the airport, I always find myself getting antsy, especially if things get delayed.

I’ve written about this topic before on a handful of occasions. I feel it deserves to be revisited once again because never has it been more timely than the last year and a half.

During the said time, we’ve all found our levels of patience being tested more than ever for a number of reasons.

Firstly, one thing the whole world has been antsy about is the desire of normalcy.

Since late 2019,  we’ve all had to combat COVID-19 in various ways. All the while, one thought has been playing in our minds like a broken record: when we things be normal again?

And let’s not forget the entire mess of the last presidential election. Plagued with controversies, the events January 6, constant debates about veracity of voting systems, etc all fried our brains no matter which side we were on politically.

Regardless of who anyone voted for, everyone had to wait longer than usual for a clear definitive winner. (Some argue about it even till today but that’s another topic for another day).

With all that in mind, allow me to collect all the tips I shared in my previous articles about being patient and present them cumulatively here:

Before we get to any exercises, it’s worth pointing out how being patient benefits us.

According to a study published in the Psychological Science journal, when we’re patient, the end result always seems more gratifying. The more we wait for something (or someone) the less granted we take it and begin to value it more.

Now of course that doesn’t eliminate the unpleasant process of waiting. Telling someone that if they climb Mount Everest, they’ll have a huge feeling of accomplishment won’t make the actual climb any easier.

But perhaps it makes us feel that the journey of getting there is worth it, no matter how arduous.

In that study, most participants, even in the midst of irritation and frustration, had increased levels of mindfulness and were reportedly a but more calm the next time.

According to Ye Li, an assistant professor at the University of California who conducted a portion of the study said exercises in patience are advantageous for self-control in many areas including, diet, sleep, smoking and mental health.

Clearly, the virtues of patience are worth imbibing.

But how do we get to that point of even thinking that way?

The following tips are taken from an article in Huffington Post as well as from my personal counselor for depression.

  • Physically write down what you’re waiting for the most. Apparently, putting something on paper can take it out of our minds, at least temporarily.
  • Focus your thoughts on the aftermath. What will you do once the wait is over? What will be the fruition of waiting? If you’re waiting for a flight, think about your plans after reaching your destination. If you’re waiting for a delivery, imagine how you’ll use whatever is being delivered.
  • Delay things which you can afford to delay. Have a favorite TV show? DVR it and start watching it ten minutes late. Eager to listen to a podcast? Put it on a “play later” playlist for just a bit. According to psychologists, steps like this can increase your tolerance of waiting for something if done sporadically.
  • Remind yourself that impatience is uncomfortable, not intolerable and become comfortable with the uncomfortable. In the article referenced above, family therapist Dr. Jane Bolten spoke of a friend who repeatedly told himself, “This is merely uncomfortable, not intolerable.” Saying so helped him break a nasty habit.

Are you a patient person or impatient? If the latter, do you have tips of your own to combat impatience? Do you agree with the points made in this article? Why or why not? Share your thoughts and experiences by commenting below on our secure servers.

DE-CLUTTERING YOUR MIND

-Ericka Oppenheimer

FUTURISM THE NEW WORD FOR UPCOMING NEWS ABOUT TODAY’S WORLD ISSUES

Today we will talk about a new daily wisdom word I bumped into called futurism.   Futurism is a fairly term I was not able to find in my Webster Dictionary version. so for today’s definition, I summed up its meaning used to convey all new medical news, technology and world events.  I thought with COVID-19  being current event, we should explore the upcoming and current events today.  It appears the United States of America is behind in medical news.  In Japan, futurism with wearing a mask seems to have happened in that country years ago.  However, we are so concerned with our “civil liberties”, we forget that not only with the mask protect ourselves, but also protects others from ourselves.  If we look at this, from the standpoint of simple respect, and how many additional individuals have died needlessly because of these “civil liberties”, it is no wonder we have gotten priorities mixed up.

In my world, I hate masks.  I used to be a person who hugged others immediately when meeting them, but I realize for their health safety and my own, futurism has been established.  The proof is in the research itself.  If we wish to have no concern for others, fine.  We should simply stay away from social events altogether.  I know it does affect local small businesses and restaurants and their amount of business.  I think it is important to realize this will not be forever.  There are already some bio-research pharmaceutical companies in phase three of clinical trials.  Once a vaccine is available and proven SAFE, we can resume life as we once knew it.  however, facts and research are just too strong to fight this or take the risk for ourselves and others.

I think it makes it more difficult for us with this being an election year.  In my book, actions have always spoken much louder than words.  When we have a world leader who does not demonstrate actions, even though his words have changed, we still often see our President without a mask.  Make your choices for yourself.  Putting others at risk is simply not safe nor a viable option in our future today.

Thanks so much for reading.  Beneath this post, is a “join the discussion” area for you to comment on your thoughts, disagreements and anything else you would like to share.  Samantha LeBoeuf/DWW

WAIT TILL TOMORROW

“There is no failure except in no longer trying.”
-Elbert Hubbard

Imagine this scenario: You’re working on a specific project or endeavor and nothing seems to be going right. Every plan, no matter how analytical when conceived, falls apart. You try and try and try and there’s no hope in sight. In short, you feel you have no option left but to give up.

FROM A DISTANCE BY BETTE MIDLER

Lyrics

From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight
From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It’s the voice of hope
It’s the voice of peace
It’s the voice of every man
From a distance we all have enough
And no one is in need
And there are no guns, no bombs and no disease
No hungry mouths to feed
From a distance we are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of hope
Playing songs of peace
They are the songs of every man
God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance
From a distance you look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance I just cannot comprehend
What all this fightings for
From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
And it’s the hope of hopes
It’s the love of loves
It’s the heart of every man
It’s the hope of hopes
It’s the love of loves
This is the song for every man
God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance
God is watching us
God is watching
God is watching us from a distance

The Past and the Aftermath

“We are products of our past but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.”
-Rick Warren

Can a bad past be erased by a great present or great future? It can’t.

But neither can a bad past prevent you from leading a good future.

We all have instances in our lives which have been traumatizing and pivotal.

That cannot be changed nor should it as each trial and tribulation is a learning experience.

But at the same time, we should never let the past, no matter how bad it was, hinder our future.

There is no situation that you cannot get out of with the exception of death.

Some circumstances are obviously more time difficult to get out of than others.

But once you do get out of one, the steps you take in the aftermath are up to you.

Let’s take an example where ostensibly, a solid future seems impossible.

If someone is a registered sex offender because of something wrong they did years ago, finding a decent job is no doubt, going to be difficult even if they’ve served the time and genuinely changed.

But there are programs that help people in that situation and teach them how to conduct themselves afterwards to show evidence of their changes and find a job. And once they do get a job, even one that is not perceived as respectable like that of a custodian, they are taught to go the extra mile to display their sincerety.

Sometimes, it takes them more than one job to prove it. It’s definitely a stop and go process. But the “go” has always been there.

Similarly, addicts who blow away their finances and reputations to fulfill their addiction needs (irrespective of the drug of choice) need to work extra hard to convince those around them that they’re clean and sober.

So yes, your past definitely lowers the probability of being happy again.

But probabilities are just that. They’re probabilities, not impossibilities.

Certain roads will be blocked for us that may be open to others because of our past.

But there’s always another route even if’s longer and has more bumps along the way.

Do you believe in second chances no matter what happened in the past? Is there any situation you feel is impossible to get out of? Share your thoughts by commenting below.

Predicting the Future

“The best way to create the future is to create it.”

-Abraham Lincoln

Can we really predict the future?

Self-help gurus always say you can by your actions. They often state that by doing the right thing today, you a have a better tomorrow.

But advice like that is obviously more on an ambitious level than a practical one.

You could be a model driver. You could stay within the speed limit, put on your seatbelt and never run a red light. But a drunk driver could still hit your car.

Even Abraham Lincoln, who said today’s quote, obviously had no way of predicting his assassination.

So what do we do?

In my opinion, you can’t control the outcome. But you can control the probability if you accept that certain things are in your control while others are not.

If you have test coming up, studying hard will put the probability in your favor. It won’t guarantee an A+ but it will guarantee a chance to pass.

If you enter a raffle, you may or may not win. But by entering it, there’s always a chance.

You can’t control the future. But if you do your part, you can certainly increases your chances of being happier.

What you think? Is even a little bit of the future in our hands? Join the discussion by commenting below.
