Daily Wisdom Word Meaning-1. The ability of one to have wit, sharpness and clarity and being completely aware of their surroundings.

Do we all have acumen? I believe we do, but some of us have more than others. For some, it acumen comes out at different times in different manifestations. For instance, acumen can be seen in watching someone finish or do a crossword puzzle, and think quickly of every answer. Acumen can also be seen by going to an Ivy League School and watching students operate in their surroundings for a day, but you don’t have to attend an Ivy League School to have acumen.

Acumen is also seen in someone when they are in precarious situations. These people “think quick on their feet”. These are the people you see with quick ways out of troubling or cornered situations. These are also people that have a comeback for a sarcastic individual each and every time and it just rolls right off of their tongue. These are also the people that know just the proper vocabulary to explain the meaning of any word at any time.

Acumen is seen in the best and the brightest where it is obviously present, but also in “sleepers” where you would least expect it. In modern English, it conveys the sense that someone is perceptive enough to grasp a situation quickly and clever enough to use what they’ve grasped from the situation.

Acumen is the sharpness of the mind in any adversity. The above are just a few examples of how acumen may be seen in other individuals, but before you decide you don’t have acumen, I can assure you somewhere within you there is the ability to develop it but it is more noticeable in some individuals than others.

The English word, Acumen retains the spelling and figurative meaning of its direct Latin ancestor, a term that literally meant “point”. Latin acumen traces to the verb acuere, which means “to sharpen” and derives from acus, the Latin word for “needle.” Acumen is really summated best with a keen mind and a sharp wit.

Acumen comes out in others when you least expect it sometimes, and can be called, sarcasm on a bad day, but it is reserved especially for those who are quick thinkers and have a fast come back for everything.
