OUR DAILY WISDOM WORD TODAY IS PATTERNS.  I AM SURE WE HAVE ALL HEARD THE WORD PATTERNS WHEN WE LISTEN TO THE WEATHER AND A HURRICANE BLOWS THROUGH.  MOTHER NATURE HAS PATTERNS.  LIFE ITSELF HAS PATTERNS WE OURSELF CREATE.  WE WILL START OFF WITH THE MEANING OF PATTERNS IN OUR WEBSTER DICTIONARY AND OUR DAILY WISDOM WORDS DEFINITION. 

WEBSTER DEFINITION OF PATTERNS-1.  A FORM OR MODEL PROPOSED FOR IMITATION;  EXEMPLAR.  2.  SOMETHING DESIGNED AND USED AS A MODEL 

DAILY WISDOM WORD DEFINITION OF PATTERNS-A DESIGN OR ORIGIN SUCH AS A DRESS MASS MANUFACTURED WHERE THE FABRIC AND DESIGN REPEATS ITSELF.  2.  REPLICATION OF CELLS IN THE HUMAN BODY. 

LIFE SEEMS TO FOLLOW PATTERNS.  THE EARTH TURNS ON ITS AXIS AROUND AND AROUND, THE SEASON’S OF NATURE HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN. SECONDS AND MINUTES REPEAT THEMSELVES IN TIME AGAIN AND AGAIN AND SO DO WE IN OUR LIFE.  WHAT WE HOPE TO AVOID WITH “PATTERNS” ARE UNHEALTHY.

NOW HOW BEST TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES AND OUR PHYSICAL BODIES YET WE DO THINGS TO ABUSE OUR BODY KNOWING WHAT IS BEST.  PATTERNS ARE EITHER HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY WHEN IT COMES TO THE HUMAN BODY.  FOR EXAMPLE, ONCE YOU GET INTO A PATTERN TO WORK OUT, THIS PATTERN TENDS TO REPEAT ITSELF.  I BELIEVE PATTERNS PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN OUR LIFE AS WE LIVE AND BREATHE.  IF YOU ARE A HEALTHY EATER, CHANCES ARE YOU WILL EAT HEALTHY EVERY DAY. 

INTERESTINGLY, ONCE WE BREAK OUR PATTERN, IT SEEMS NATURAL TO RETURN TO IT SO IF WE HAVE UNHEALTHY PATTERNS IT CAN DAMAGE US OR OUR LIFE.  ADDICTION IS A VERY IMPORTANT THING WE ALL CREATE PATTERNS WITH.  ONCE WE ARE IN THE “HABIT OF SOMETHING”, WITHOUT ACTIVE THOUGHT MONITORING IF WE WISH TO CHANGE THIS PATTERN, WE SHOULD REALIZE THAT CHANCES ARE GOOD WE WILL FALL OFF THE WAGON AND RETURN TO THIS UNHEALTHY, DANGEROUS PATTERN.  LIFE IS FULL OF PATTERNS.  WE DELIBERATELY BUILD HEALTHY HABITS LEADING TO PATTERNS.  WITHOUT REALIZING IT, WE ALSO DEVELOP UNHEALTHY PATTERNS.  WE MAY KNOW THESE HABITS OR PATTERNS WHICH REPLICATE SUCH AS A VIRUS OVER AND OVER MUST BE CHANGED.

REPITITION

THE HUMAN BODY AND MIND THRIVE OFF OF REPETITION.  REPETITION AND HABIT PATTERNS ARE THINGS THE BODY COMES TO EXPECT WHETHER YOU ARE MALE OR FEMALE.  IF WE USE REPETITION THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES, BECAUSE THIS REPETITION IS JUST THAT;  WE ARE REPEATING THE SAME BEHAVIOR WE ARE USED TO AND COMFORTABLE WITH PERFORMING SPECIFIC SETS OF ACTIONS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. 

THERE ARE RARE ISSUES WITH REPEATING THE SAME BEHAVIOR OVER AND OVER AGAIN BUT DO WE CONTINUE TO GROW EMOTIONALLY MENTALLY, AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY IF WE’RE FOLLOWING THE SAME PATH OVER AND OVER AGAIN?  LET US  ELABORATE A BIT FURTHER.  ONCE WE HAVE A ROUTINE DOWN AND IT IS SECOND NATURE FOR ANY BEHAVIOR, GOOD OR BAD FOR US AND WE FEEL COMFORTABLE WHEN WE ARE SO FAMILIAR WITH THE STEPS WE TAKE FROM START TO FINISH WITH THESE ROUTINES, WE AREN’T GROWING.  WE FEEL WE MOST COMFORTABLE IN OUR MOST WORN IN SHOES, BUT OVER TIME, WHEN WEARING THIS SAME PAIR, WE FORGET THE EXCITEMENT OF HAVE A NEW PAIR.  WE FORGET HOW WORKING HARD WITH SOMEONE TO BUILD A LIFE TOGETHER, IS ABOUT MANY THINGS, AND ONE OF THEM IS NOT ALWAYS ROUTINE;  “WE ARE BUILDING SOMETHING DIFFERENT DAILY INSTEAD OF FROM THE SAME BLUEPRINT WHEN WE MAKE AN EFFORT TO DO AND CREATE SOMETHING DIFFERENT.  SOMETHING SPECIAL BEGINS TO TAKE PLACE.  WE FIND OURSELVES GROWING WITH THE OTHER PERSON AND BUILDING SOMETHING WE HAVE NEVER BUILT BEFORE.  ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT A ROUTINE, WE FIND EACH OF US LEARNING SOMETHING NEW.  OF COURSE, IT FEELS WONDERFUL TO BE IN A COMFORTABLE OLD SET OF SHOES.  THIS IS AROUND THE TIME WE NEED TO ASK OURSELVES WILL WE BE OKAY WITHOUT TOO MUCH CHANGE OR TOO MUCH GROWTH BUT STAYING STAGNANT?  OFTEN TIMES THE ANSWER SPEAKS TO OUR LOYALTY, OUR FOR SOMETHING RATHER THAN THE SOMEONE AND THEIR HEART AND OUR HEART LOVING ONE ANOTHER. ALTHOUGH WHAT I HAVE JUST DESCRIBED ARE CLEARLY TWO DIFFERENT SETS OF CIRCUMSTANCES, EACH OF THEM BRING A FORM OF FULFILLMENT TO THE TABLE FOR BOTH PARTIES OF THE RELATIONSHIP.  OFTEN TIMES AS WE ENJOY THE OLD PAIR OF COMFORTABLE SHOES, WE DEAL WITH THE STAGNATION MENTALLY.  THIS IS WHY EACH DECISION AND SOLUTION WILL BE DIFFERENT DETERMINED BY HOW YOU LIST PRIORITIES, HOW EASILY YOU GET BORED AND OF COURSE, WHERE YOU RANK SECURITY.  ONE KIND OF RELATIONSHIP OFFERS EXCITEMENT, MORE DISAGREEMENT, BUT MUCH GROWTH OR THE COUPLE BREAKS UP IF THE LOVE IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND CHANGE AND YES, TURMOIL.  NO OTHER PERSON BUT YOU, CAN ANSWER WHICH DESCRIPTION OF THESE TWO RELATIONSHIPS ARE BETTER OR WORSE THAT THE OTHER FOR YOU, BUT YOU, SO THINK LONG, HARD AND HOW THE NATURE OF COMMITMENT YOU NEED.  LET US END THIS WITH A QUICK DEFINITION OF REPETITION FROM OUR WEBSTER DICTIONARY AND OUR DAILY WISDOM WORDS DEFINITION.  WEBSTER DICTIONARY DEFINITION O F REPETITION-1.  THE ACTION OF REPEATING SOMETHING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN STATED OR WRITTEN.  2.  THE RECURRENCE OF AN ACTION OR EVENT.  DAILY WISDOM WORD DEFINITION OF REPETITION-1.  DOING THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE YOU EXPERIENCE A SENSE OF COMFORT OR FAMILIARITY IN.  2.  HABIT PATTERNS SET AT THE SAME TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT, THE SAME LESSONS RELEARNED AND THE SADNESS OFF THE MUNDANE.

PROCLIVITIES HOW MUCH CONSIDERATION DO WE GIVE TO CRIMINAL PROCLIVITES?

Today’s Daily Wisdom Word will be:  proclivities; especially those things one is drawn to from birth because of genetics.  Because of this, should we give legal leadway to those criminals with genetic proclivities?  These individuals for as long as they have been experiencing and enjoying for example, sexually inappropriate behavior can be traced to their genetics.  Should we give special consideration for this when sentencing an individual for a sexual crime?  Good question I said to myself, when I saw an article on proclivities.  Proclivities are genetically innate.  This means somewhere inside their DNA, they have a gene which makes them blurry on sexual boundaries. 

Psychology has always fascinated me.  I remember watching a really interesting show on a gene known as the murder gene.  While it is true the numbers are somewhat higher in innate sexual deviancy, I have heard of individuals who truly have this gene.  When they are raised in a socially nurturing home life, and taught how to please their parents through positive reinforcement, they seem to often have restraint with their proclivities.  Therefore, I think since these individuals have a higher propensity their genetic code, we also should have supporting evidence to support or unsupport what their home life, security and nurturing was like as they grew up.  A theory of mine is we DO have some control ourselves. There are certain proclivities  that we can overcome if we had a strong, loving support system growing up.   When we have a strong support system, we are able to fight or even ignore the negative urges that create a predatory criminal.  There is some evidence that although innately our genetic code has a modification attracting us to these negative violations, it may lie dormant should the individual have a positive, loving background and overall support system.  

What happens when an individual gets a fair shake in our court system we all agree isn’t perfect. In cases of sexual deviancy, often a caseworker is assigned to psychologically test the individual.  This individual may be outside the standard deviation or normal range, and they have no support system and have been in foster care all their lives?  Do we use their background when negative, to recommend lower sentencing guidelines for them over another person committing the same exact sexual crime with a positive support system, who is coming from a nurturing loving family?

I had to look at the dictionary for this meaning, although I have heard the word used in legal cases and negative behaviors that repeat.  We favor our proclivities, appreciating them for what they are. 

Let us take a look at the meaning of proclivities.

Webster Dictionary Meaning for Proclivities-1.  A tendency to choose or do something regularly;  an inclination or predisposition towards a particular thing.   2.  The fact that someone likes something, or likes to do something especially considered morally wrong. (definition#2 came from dictionary.com)

Daily Wisdom Word Definition of Proclivities- those things that are potential weaknesses we have a propensity for.

Almost all of us have proclivities, according to definition of this word from the webster dictionary. Some of these are more dangerous than others!  Proclivities could be an innate desire to exercise to the point you hurt yourself but keep going because you are addicted to the endorphin  high.  

Often we hear the mention of proclivities linked to hollywood stars or others related to sexual deviancy.  The older I get, the more I realize, just as we all are very much the same, we each clearly have our differences.

ROUTINES

Routines are our Daily Wisdom Word today.  This article will cover how to create a routine, keep one and share with you why it is so important to have them.  I remember when I was much younger and my children were babies.  I subconsciously established a routine for each of them.  They knew when to expect what down to the hour.  I was not a freak about it.  I just found they seemed to thrive better knowing what to expect.  

When I was growing up, I did not have a routine.  Think about our life, however with the things we do not establish that are routine as we grow up not set by our parents. When children go to school, they learn routines quickly.  There is a time for a snack or nap and time for each of the subjects they study.   Everything is based on routines.  When I was growing up, we really did not have routines around our house.  There were four children and things were often chaotic.  This did not make me feel very safe and apparently had a huge impact on me.  Now that I am disabled, I find it hard to keep with a routine.  However, I notice my body does not.  I seem to wake up at the same time each morning and go to sleep around the same time.  The routine I have now is a routine of no physical activity.  This is not healthy and I have developed many new fears that are unrealistic because I am not following an active routine.  I am certainly not in the physical health I once was.

We will take a look at the Webster Definition of routine and the Daily Wisdom Words Definition.

Daily Wisdom Word definition of a routine-a schedule set and followed at specific times each day. 

How do we develop a routine?  I have mentioned this in previous articles or blogs.  A new routine is like anything new.  You start a routine by defining one.  The brain plays a major role in a routine.  It takes a minimum of 3 weeks for the brain to begin to “anticipate” what to expect, and when to expect it.  If you are starting an exercise program, pick the days you will do it upfront, along with the time you will exercise.  At first, think of your brain, not your body your working out.  For the first month, do the very same exercises you do each day you have picked.  Then, you may “alter” the routine which is actually good for the body.  The brain and body work opposite each other.  The brain thrives on the exact same thing.  However, the physical part of our bodies gets used to this such as with a diet, or exercise program so you must change it up without altering the basics of your routine such as the time of day you do it.  

You begin again, for three weeks doing what you did before with the first new routine, two days a week, and a new, altered routine three days a week.  The brain accepts this.  Have you ever quit exercising for example and started back?  Especially if you use the same time of day you once did, the muscle has memory!. You usually get in shape much more quickly.  Don’t forget as you get older, you lose muscle.  Make sure to start back exercising with increased muscle-building exercises.  

There are also other tools in our toolbelt in life we have to strengthen routines.  One tool is affirmations.  Affirmations are writing down what you want as if it has or is happening already.  You use “routine” to your benefit, doing these affirmations at the same time of day which creates, after approximately three weeks a new habit or routine.  Routines can be a useful tool you can mold like clay to work for you.  Try these suggestions and see if they do not work.  I have reminded myself now, by writing this to get back in touch with a healthy routine.  We have both hopefully helped each other.

MODIFICATIONS

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO USE MODIFICATION WHEN MAKING CHANGES IN OUR LIVES?  WHEN WE MODIFY SOMETHING, WE DO CHANGE IT.  HOWEVER, I LIKE TO THINK OF THE MEANING OF MODIFICATIONS AS LESS EXTREME.  WE HAVE ALL MADE OUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS.  I THINK OF THESE CHANGES AS SIMPLY MODIFYING OUR BEHAVIOR.  LET US TAKE A LOOK AT THE DEFINITION OF MODIFICATIONS.

WEBSTER DEFINITION OF MODIFICATIONS-1.  THE ACTION OF MODIFYING SOMETHING.  2.  TO MAKE CHANGES

DAILY WISDOM WORD DEFINITION OF MODIFICATION-1.  TO CHANGE OUR BEHAVIOR IN A REASONABLE MANNER.  TO TWEAK EXISTING BEHAVIOR TO RUSULT IN A BETTER OUTCOME.

CHANGE IS NEVER EASY FOR US.  CHANGE REQUIRES WE SET UP A WHOLE NEW ROUTINE.  CHANGE REQUIRES AN OVERHAUL IN OUR BEHAVIOR.  MODIFICATIONS, HOWEVER, REQUIRE MAKING ALTERATIONS IN OUR EVERYDAY ROUTINES WHICH IS A LOT LESS DEMANDING ON HUMAN BEINGS.  TO MODIFY OR CHANGE OUR BEHAVIOR, REQUIRES 21 DAYS OF RIGOROUS CHANGE.  THIS MEANS FOR 21 DAYS WE NEED TO REPEAT THE NEW BEHAVIOR BEFORE OUR BRAIN BEGINS TO ACCEPT IT AS HABIT.  THIS SOUNDS OVERWHELMING BUT IF YOU SIMPLY DO THREE WEEKS OF THE NEW BEHAVIOR YOU WISH TO MODIFY OR CHANGE, YOUR BRAIN WILL THEN ACCEPT THIS AS A “RECOGNIZED PATTERN” OR THE BEGINNING OF A HABIT.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT SOME CHANGES MAKE SERIOUS ALTERATIONS TO OUR BRAIN CHEMISTRY SUCH AS ADDICTION.  IT MAY REQUIRE MORE EXTREME MODIFICATIONS TO CHANGE ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR.  WE MAY NEED TO CHANGE OUR COMPLETE ROUTINE.  FOR EXAMPLE, LET’S SAY WE ARE ADDICTED TO ALCOHOL.  TO ABSTAIN FROM DRINKING ALCOHOL, WE NEED TO ADAPT OUR SURROUNDINGS AS WELL AS OUR HABITS.  IT WOULD NOT BE VERY ENCOURAGING TO BE GOING TO A BAR WATCHING EVERYONE ELSE DRINK WHILE YOU WERE ABSTAINING.  

I CHOSE MODIFICATIONS DELIBERATELY AS ONE OF OUR FIRST DAILY WISDOM WORDS.  THIS IS BECAUSE I KNOW MOST OF US HAVE MADE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT REQUIRE US NOT ONLY TO MODIFY THE BEHAVIOR, BUT MODIFY OUR ROUTINE.  MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS INVOLVE LOSING WEIGHT AND EXERCISING AGAIN.  IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT I USED TO BE AN EXERCISE FANATIC AND THIS WAS NOT THAT LONG AGO.  MY BRAIN ALREADY HAS A PATTERN IN ITS MEMORY OF WHAT IT IS LIKE TO EXERCISE ROUTINELY.  THESE CHANGES OR MODIFICATIONS, ALTHOUGH DIFFICULT, ONCE STARTED USUALLY STICK.  THIS HAS TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT OUR BRAIN HAS WHAT IS CALLED, MUSCLE MEMORY.  “MUSCLE MEMORY” IS NOT A MADE UP TERM.  WE HAVE MUSCLE MEMORY FROM WHEN WE DID WORK OUT AND HAD THIS ROUTINE.  

THE MOST DIFFICULT MODIFICATIONS OR CHANGES TO MAKE, ARE THOSE THAT CHANGE EXISTING BRAIN CHEMISTRY OR WE ARE CHANGING SOMETHING THAT ALTERED OUR BRAIN CHEMISTRY PERMANENTLY SUCH AS STOPPING ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS THAT CHANGE OUR LEVELS OF DOPAMINE, SEROTONIN, OR OTHER NEUROTRANSMITTERS.  THIS IS WHEN WE MUST START THIS CHANGE OR MODIFICATION OFF REALIZING IT WILL GET WORSE BEFORE IT GETS EASIER.  ALCOHOL AND DRUGS, AND YES, IN A HEALTHY WAY, EXERCISE ALTER OUR BRAIN CHEMISTRY.  ALCOHOL AND DRUGS HOWEVER, HAVE THE POWER TO ALTER THE BRAIN CHEMISTRY PERMANENTLY ;  SOMETIMES, FOREVER.  THIS IS WHY MANY PEOPLE WILL GO THROUGH A DEPRESSION WHEN ABANDONING THESE BEHAVIORS AND ARE BEST SUITED TO CHANGING THEIR DAILY PATTERNS OR HABITS.

WHATEVER CHANGES YOUR MAKING THIS YEAR, REMEMBER:  FOR THOSE BASIC CHANGES TO START A PATTERN OF NEW BEHAVIOR, IT WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY THREE WEEKS FOR THE BRAIN TO CATCH UP TO YOUR NEW BEHAVIOR.  BE PATIENT.  DO NOT ALLOW BACKTRACKING OR RELAPSING INTO THE OLD BEHAVIOR DETER YOU.  WE ALL WILL FALTER FROM TIME TO TIME, BUT IT IS UP TO US TO GET RIGHT BACK IN THE SADDLE AND RIDE.  CHANGE OR MODIFICATIONS TO OUR BEHAVIOR TAKES TIME AND IF WE GO BACK TO OUR OLD PATTERNS WE WILL SIMPLY REMEMBER WHY WE WANTED TO MAKE THESE CHANGES TO BEGIN WITH.
