Be The Hero

THIS ARTICLE ENTITLED, “BE THE HERO”, IS BY DR.SHANNI DOVER

Hello all. Today I am submitting this, my first post on DailyWisdomWords.com. I am excited to have the opportunity to reach out to others.

For this first entry, I will discuss ‘being the hero of your own life story’. Joseph Campbell is credited with the quote:

“You are the hero of your own story.”

Simply put, this means that you and you alone define your life. Through faith in yourself, you decide who and what you will be.

Therefore, it stands to reason that we have the power to be a hero if we choose. With each challenge, and mistake, we can rise to the occasion and conquer the shadows. Those who see only our mistakes may view us as failures, but this far from the truth. Mistakes are part of everyone’s life, and how we face adversity is what truly helps to define us.

Thus, by believing in ourselves and accepting both the good and bad, we can choose to embrace the pain and reinvent ourselves. Consequently, we can grow  and learn as a result of the trials we face, and subsequently become better human beings. By being the hero of your own life story, you validate your experiences and you help to define your existence. Furthermore, by working towards self understanding, we open a door to our true selves: the hero within. This is more than mere survival; this is a path towards thriving in your life.

A Positive Choice

Remember that one of your choices is to maintain a positive countenance in the face of heartbreaks. Our tolerance for life’s ambiguity is key to our growth, both intellectually and emotionally. By practicing positivity, you can look at your life with all its ups and downs without judging yourself too harshly.

Additionally, being the hero allows for your internal structures/schemes to be altered. Very much the way steel is tempered by fire, your seeming losses can be construed as learning opportunities…a means to your personal growth.

“Experience: that most brutal teacher. But you learn, my God do you learn.”

-William Nicholson, 1948

Beyond the personal empowerment that can be gained by reframing your own definition of success, your life can be a shining example to others as they traverse life’s labyrinth.

As a result, your life also allows you to be the hero of someone else’s story, given that you are born with a wellspring of strength and love. Every act of kindness, whether that be a smile or a hand held tightly, can serve to uplift others.

Life is love: sharing love, being love…this is your heroic path. The gift of life is immeasurable and unlike any other gift you could receive. By being a hero, you show others that they too can be heroes in their own lives and perhaps in the life of others.

“What I like about experience is that it is such an honest thing… You may have deceived yourself, but experience is not trying to deceive you. The universe rings true wherever you fairly test it.”

-C.S. Lewis

Next week, Sunday at 3:00, I will discuss ways in which we can become the hero in our lives, as well as in the lives of others. Please feel free to offer your feedback, e.g., was this of value to you? Until then, dear Reader, I remain your friend.

PESSIMISM

How can pessimism affect our lives and what is its exact definition?

Pessimism, according to the Webster Dictionary means:  1.  a tendency to see the worst aspect of things or believe that the worst will happen;  a lack of hope or confidence in the future.  2.  a belief that the world is as bad as it could be or that evil will ultimately prevail over good.

Daily Wisdom Word Definition:  1.  An attitude that darkens ones perspective based on the negative way they look at their perspective on life.  2.  A belief that the glass is half empty instead of half full.

Yesterday, we wrote about optimism.  Today, we are writing about its antonym, pessimism, so we can compare the differences in ways that each affects our perspective and outcomes in life.  Pessimism tends to put a gloomy cast on everything we do, how we do it, but most importantly, how you SEE it.  Pessimism is a choice just as optimism is.  We can choose to look at our world in this negative way subconsciously without even realizing it.  We can choose to see the glass of water as a glass of stained dark water, almost empty.  I am using some extreme examples here, to help you understand that we all have a choice with our perspective, however, pessimism becomes subconscious when events, that aren’t always our fault, in fact, most of the time they aren’t, affect that perspective making it dark and gloomy.

We can choose however, to let these negative experiences affect our outcome permanently without even meaning too.  I woke up this morning, early as always, and my first thought was that of pessimism.  The first thing I thought, was, why do I have to get up so early to write?  My second thought was, it is my choice, and I love to write,  so I am going to make the best of it.  Yes, I am tired, and a bit of an insomniac, which I can’t help, but I can choose to look at the positive in things.  At the very least I can focus on what it is I am getting up for and write something that helps others.

When we focus on others instead of ourselves, we are less pessimistic.  We tend to realize that our own situations are not nearly as bad as we thought.  In fact, I can look at things in a brighter light realizing as an analogy that I have two legs, and the person I am helping, has only one.  I am not suggesting the only way to be more optimistic is realize that others don’t have it at easy as we do, but I am suggesting that by being grateful for the things we do have, we tend to be more optimistic.  Look at the Webster definition of pessimism above.

We can also believe in life, that the worst is not only happening, but that the worst will happen.  This is the case with someone like my sister.  First of all, she doesn’t mean to think this way or consciously choose to, but does think that the worst is going to happen in her life by habit.  This is a habit she has spent her whole life fighting to overcome which is positive in and of itself.  She, has been single a number of years, and during these years she has devoted much of her time to changing this attitude, but due to her life experiences which she had no control over, there were and are extenuating circumstances that would make anyone think it would be very difficult not to be pessimistic.  She constantly, due to being a single mother, without the father of her children playing an active role in their life, had to bear the responsibility of raising two girls alone.  She also operated off of fear which can play a major role in pessimism, and this she also chose to fight.  For God sake, she lost her first child at the age of three, and this, played a major role in how she saw raising her next two girls by fearing always the worst would happen to them as well, which thank God, it has not.

What I admire most about my sister is how hard she fought pessimism and how her very attitude and sheer self-will got her through it.  She was constantly being proactive in changing her attitude which is now more optimistic in itself, so if life deals you a horrible situation like losing a child, and fearing the worst will happen to the next two, you still have the power to work on changing your attitude.  That is what she did, and always has done and she has two beautiful healthy young women now, out on their own that she can take the credit of raising, and doing a great job at it because she fought pessimism. We all have a choice in life on how we choose to see it.  She chose to fight back.  When we have a horrible thing happen to us that is out of our control, we must realize that life moves forward, and there is one thing we can always be certain of, and that is change.  Positive changes are now happening in her life, and she has dealt with a bad set of cards and turned them into a royal flush.

Not only did she do a beautiful job raising her girls, she did so with a positive attitude although it was a struggle at times not to fear something would happen to her children just as it had her first child. Behind, pessimism, is usually fear.  I say, fear is, False Evidence Appearing Real.  F-E-A-R.

I must say, I admire her.  She chose to think positive and do her best not to let that fear control her, and she overcame pessimism one day at a time.  That was the second Webster Definition of Pessimism, fearing the worst is going to happen in one’s world.  We can always choose to fight pessimism, whether we are born thinking this way, or whether it comes from fearing life itself.

Pessimism is a great Wisdom Word because there is so much we can learn from it and move over to thinking with optimism.  After all, I have seen these changes take place in real time under real circumstances.  I promise all of us, that we do have the power to change the way we think but it doesn’t always happen overnight and it isn’t always easy, but if you ask my sister, I know she would say it is worth it.  Which way would and do you choose to live your life?  With Pessimism or with Optimism?  It is, after all, your choice in the long run.

Thank you so much for reading Daily Wisdom Words today, and God bless you and bless your day.

OPTIMISM

Why is optimism so important in our lives and what is its exact definition?

Let us first take a look in the Webster Dictionary to get its exact definition and meaning:  Optimism-1.  hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something.  2.  the doctrine, especially as set forth by Leibniz, that this world is the best of all possible worlds.  3.  the belief that good must ultimately prevail over evil in this universe.

Daily Wisdom Word Definition:  Optimism-1.  thinking of everything in its best possible light.  An attitude of positivity which can be our main source of creativity causing things that are created to be the best they can possibly be.

Optimism can make all the difference in our world.  It is the difference between seeing the glass half empty or half full.  Optimism can mean walking around with a smile on your face or a frown on your face.  Optimism is a choice.  It is a choice between deciding to make the best possible day out of your day, or viewing it in the worst possible light.  It can also mean being responsive to the negative things that happen throughout your day or learning to shake them off as part of the day itself.

Optimism can be created.  You might wonder how you create optimism and have looked at individuals filled with it and hated them for it, Lol, but it truly can be created through something called affirmations.  Affirmations is broken down from the word, affirming, or affirming the positive.  You can wake up in the morning and while your still in that half groggy state, tell yourself, exactly how your day will go in a positive light, by simply affirming the positive as if it has already happened.   You can also reinforce these affirmations by writing them down to follow your thoughts, sort of like goal setting only, an affirmation would be stated like this if you were to write it down:  I enjoy having the best day possible, today.  The word, today is crucial because it places a time line on your affirmation.

Affirmations need to be as positive and specific as possible.  For example, what about your day do you wish to be positive if this is your affirmation.  Are you going to have a test at school you wish to do well on?  You can affirm the positive or optimistic outlook by being as specific as possible.  Instead of saying you wish to have the best day possible, you might want to say, “I enjoy receiving an A on my Biology test today.  Then, when you have done this, you wish to visualize it happening.  Picture that A written down on your paper you turn in.  The more senses you can involve in your affirmations the more powerful they will be..  This, is the most sure way to have an optimistic outlook on life, is through affirmations.

Carry optimism with you like you do your purse or wallet.  Picture optimism as an extra tool in your tool belt and use it to its fullest.  Another thing about optimism?  It spreads.  If you see someone you know, make it a point to say hello and compliment them on something you sincerely see you like about them on that day.  Daily Wisdom Words is centered around optimism even when it is writing about something that is not the happiest.

Optimism is easy to write about for me, because I truly believe it is the best possible tool we have to make our day go the best possibly it can.  If you have a flat tire, you have two choices.  Fix it, and laugh about it, or get out of the car cussing.  Either way won’t change the outcome but one will assure you that it won’t destroy your day.

I have written about one of the most powerful things you have in life that you do have control over and that is whether you will choose to have a positive, optimistic outlook on your day, or a negative, pessimistic one.  Its truly your choice!!

Thank you for reading about your daily wisdom word today, and I hope you have a blessed and beautiful day!

IMPOVRISHMENT

"

What is impoverishment and how does it affect our society?

Let us first take a look at the daily wisdom word meaning of impoverishment in our Webster Dictionary-1.  the process of becoming poor.  loss of wealth.

Daily Wisdom Word Meaning-1.  The act of being poor and the high statistics of people that suffer from not having enough money to live on for themselves and their families.

Impoverishment affects high numbers of individuals across the world and most people would be surprised just how many.  Nearly 1/2 of the world, lives on less than 2.50 cents per day US money.  That is horrific if you think about it.  More than 1/2 of the worlds population live in impoverishment and this affects their medical care, their ability to eat vitamin rich foods, ability for cleanliness (842,000 people per year), ability for electricity, (1/4 of the world lives without it.)

According to UNICEF,  22,000 children die each day due to poverty.  More than 750 million individuals deal with a lack of clean water.  850 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat.

Stats in 2011 showed 165 million children world wide under the age of five years old, were stunted in their development due to chronic malnutrition,  As if 2013, 21.8 million children had not received the three recommended doses of vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis.

More facts yet tell us that 80 percent of the world lives on less than $10.00 per day.  OXFAM estimates it would take $60 billion annually to end extreme global poverty-that is less than 1/4 the income of the top 100 richest billionaires.  Hunger, by the way, in the number one cause of death in the world, killing more than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.

These facts are astounding and if they were not so enlightening and important, I would not have put them in this article.  I don’t know what its like to feel hungry and not eat, but I do know what its like to grow up in a household that is poor.  My family definitely hurt for more money, but none of the above statistics affected us.

There is a difference between being poor and being impoverished.  Medical care took much of our money growing up in a household of four children and one income winner, we put it above all else, and there were times when we had to work out payment plans to pay for that medical care, but at least we had it.  We had to cut corners with food, eating hamburgers a lot along with hotdogs, macaroni and cheese, and less expensive foods.  Sadly, the most expensive food is often the healthiest.  Fruits and fresh vegetables are at the top of the list as far as expense goes.

The saddest fact of all, is it would just take $20 per month to wipe out world hunger from those of us who can afford it.  Yet, many people, including myself don’t consistently donate to World Health Organizations, for fear the money will not go where is supposed to.  We can fix this with $20 per month from those of us that can afford it.  Can you imagine having that much effect on world hunger with just $20 dollars a day.

One last fact.  The poorest country in the world surprisingly is Asia.  The countries within it exceed all of the above facts by 50%.  That is so sad.

I ask you to think about today’s daily wisdom word, and ask yourself what you can do about it.  Until I did the research for this post, I have avoided taking part in the solution and instead stayed a part of the problem, because when I really, quietly sit down and ask myself, there is 20$ a month I could manage to set aside to help.  What about the top billionaires and what they could do?  There is a lot we all can do to put a stop to impoverishment.

Thank you so much for reading daily wisdom words today, and I appreciate your reading.

Have a beautiful and blessed day.
