DYSCALCULIA AND CHILDREN

According to Wikipedia, dyscalculia is a disability resulting in difficulty learning or comprehending arithmetic, such as difficulty in understanding numbers, learning how to manipulate numbers, performing mathematical calculations and learning facts in mathematics.

This disability abounds in children and adults too. One of the perks of having dyscalculia is that there is high retention of words. In other words, children with dyscalculia are great writers. Let us talk about it today.

TIES

TODAY, OUR DAILY WISDOM WORD IS TIES.   OFTEN TIMES WE HEAR THE PHRASE, “THE TIES THAT BIND”.  OUR LIVES ARE FULL OF TIES, BOTH LITERAL AND METAPHORIC. AS THINGS UNFOLD IN OUR LIFE, SOMETIMES THESE TIES BREAK.  WHEN THIS HAPPENS, IT OFTEN IS FOR THE BEST.  IF YOU BELIEVE IN DESTINY, YOU MAY FIND THIS CONCEPT EASIER TO DIGEST.   

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS ARE ACCURATE FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND WHY CERTAIN THINGS HAPPEN IN LIFE THAT HURT. WE OFTEN DON’T REALIZE THIS UNTIL WE SEE WHERE OUR LIFE HAS GONE DOWN THE ROAD A BIT.  WE WILL THEN LOOK BACK AT THOSE BROKEN TIES AND REALIZE IT WAS NECESSARY FOR US TO BREAK THOSE PREVIOUS TIES IN ORDER TO TIE OUR SHOES AGAIN IN OUR PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES. I BELIEVE LIFE  WORKS THIS WAY TODAY. 

I AM NOT A PSYCHIATRIST.  LOOKING BACK, WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I LOVED DIFFERENT KINDS OF MENTAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL COURSES. I CREATED THEORIES LIKE THIS:  TIES SHOULD ONLY BE KNOTTED AGAIN IF WE “FIT” IN THE CURRENT SHOES LIFE IS ASKING US TO WEAR AND LACE UP OR TIE OR GOD IS.  I OFTEN HAVE WHAT I CALL, AN “AH HA” MOMENT AND REMEMBER WHERE I’VE ONCE BEEN AND THE NECESSITY TO EXPERIENCE THE FEELINGS HAD DURING EVENTS WE’VE EXPERIENCED IN THE PAST. 

THESE ARE THE PAST EVENTS WE EXPERIENCED, WHICH LEAD TO US TAKING THE NEXT STEP IN KNOWLEDGE.  BECAUSE OF THESE EVENTS, WE FINALLY UNDERSTAND WHY WE’VE EXPERIENCED WHATEVER WE DID TO GET  TO THIS NEW STEP EXPERIENCED IN THE PAST.  WE EVOLVE, ESPECIALLY WITH EMOTIONS, AND TIES ARE ALMOST ALWAYS CONNECTING THIS KNOWLEDGE TOGETHER. 

LET US TAKE A LOOK AT THE DEFINITION OF TIES THAT APPLY TO THIS POST FROM OUR WEBSTER DICTIONARY AND OUR DAILY WISDOM WORDS MEANING.  1.  TO BRING TOGETHER IN RELATIONSHIP, CONNECT OE UNITE.  FRIENDS WHO WERE TIED TO COMMON INTERESTS.  2.  PEOPLE WHO ARE TIED BY BLOOD OR MARRIAGE.

Concentrate and Less

It is a new month and I would like to say welcome to the month of June. You may want to learn something new, ice skating. Some friends of mine may already know the art of ice skating well enough to tell us that the first step to go through ice skating without hitting the ice is to concentrate less.

Sounds weird right? Yes, it is. Concentrating less is the key to the art of ice skating. This notion is solely based on the series I am currently seeing, American gods. I recommend you watch this three seasoned TV series if you have a thing for divinity. Time to get into the act.

PARAPHRASING “SURPRISING BENEFITS OF PARAPHRASING”

HOW CAN PARAPHRASING BENEFIT US?  SURPRISINGLY, THE NUMBER ONE PROBLEM WHEN COMMUNICATION BREAKS DOWN HAPPENS WHEN WE DON’T FEEL LIKE THE PERSON WE ARE SPEAKING TO EITHER HEARD US OR UNDERSTOOD WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO SAY.  PARAPHRASING IS OUR ANSWER TO AVOID THESE TWO COMMUNICATION ISSUES, ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT PERSON is passionate about their message they want us to hear.  Paraphrasing is the key to allowing us convey we are understanding the person and what they mean in what they say, are communicating.  The “listener” needs to know we are hearing them. 

In many cases during communication a person can be sharing their message with us verbally.  Sometimes we don’t fully understand their message, and the number one reason this happens is because w don’t!  There are two ways to listen to another person speaking to us.  One is by actively listening with the other being passive listening.  When we are actively listening, we are involved in communicating their message back to them and what it meant.  One way to actively listen is to allow them to get their messages to us in a way they feel we understood it.  The easiest way to really hear another person is to paraphrase.  Let us take a look at our Webster Dictionary meaning and our Daily Wisdom Word meaning of paraphrasing.   

Webster definition of paraphrasing- 1.  express the meaning of the writer or speaker or something written or spoken using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.  2.  a rewording of something written or spoken by someone else.

Daily Wisdom Word meaning of paraphrasing-rewording a message conveyed to you in order to convey your understanding of this message, whether verbal or written. 

Paraphrasing can be very helpful with conversation if for no reason than learning more or making sure what you did learn or hear was accurate, especially when the topic of conversation isn’t one you are familia with.   I have homework for my readers today.  I want you to write a sentence down and convey the meaning of what you have written so that you can practice using paraphrasing.  Then, look back at what you read and rewrite this same message conveying the same information in different words. 

You may be an #author reading this now and wonder how this can benefit you.  Sometimes as the author of a book others read, especially when written about a complicated  subject.  You very likely wen prompting your work, do a book signing.  You may be asked, (most likely you will) to clarify to someone what you meant in what you wrote in something specific about your book.  Paraphrasing is so helpful with this. By rephrasing your words to the reader who is asking what you meant when writing this particular message, you will show the reader a clarity about what message you were conveying and see a light go off in their head.  This in and of itself makes mastering how to paraphrase worth it.  Thanks so much for reading!  Samantha LeBoeuf-Dailywisdomwords.com

ADVICE- WHEN SHOULD WE TAKE SOMEONE ELSE’S ADVICE?

WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT ADVICE TODAY.  WHEN SHOULD WE TAKE ADVICE FROM SOMEONE ELSE?  WHEN SHOULD WE LISTEN TO OURSELVES INSTEAD?   WE ALL HAVE ISSUES, AND IT IS SOMETIMES AN EXCELLENT IDEA TO GET ADVICE FROM A FRIEND YOU TRUST, A FAMILY MEMBER WHO LOVES YOU, OR A COUNSELOR.  

IT IS EASY TO SHRUG OFF THE RESPONSIBILITY TO  OTHERS WHEN WE HAVE AN IMPORTANT DECISION TO MAKE.  WHY?  FIRST OF ALL, IF THE ADVICE THE OTHER PARTY GIVES, IS NOT THE CORRECT ADVICE, YOU DON’T HAVE TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE DECISION.  IT IS GOOD AND POSITIVE WHEN YOU HAVE ENOUGH “FAITH AND TRUST”,  (READ THOSE WORDS AGAIN), “FAITH AND TRUST IN OURSELVES”. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES OUR EGO IS TOO BIG TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS FAIR AND BALANCED, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE ADVICE THEY WOULD SHARE WITH US WOULD TRULY HELP US.  

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BECOME OVERLY CONFIDENT IN OURSELVES?  THE ANSWER IS YES.  THE POINT WHICH YOU CAN TRUST YOUR OWN INSTINCT AND INTUITION WHEN MAKING A DECISION IS WHEN WE FEEL COMFORTABLE AND SECURE WE HAVE ENOUGH KNOWLEDGE TO MAKE THE DECISION.  LET’S PRETEND YOU POUR CONCRETE FOR A LIVING.  THE TIME HAS COME TO INVEST IN THE COMPANIES 401K PROGRAM.  YOU, HOWEVER DO NOT HAVDE THE KNOWLEDGE TO MAKE THIS KIND OF DECISION.  IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR PROFESSION AND YOU’VE NEVER TAKEN AN INTEREST IN STOCKS AND BONDS OR THE BROKERAGE ACCOUNTS THAT MANAGE THEM.  WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?  SHOULD YOU MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION?  IS IT THE WISEST OPTION FOR YOU TO DO SO?  THE ANSWER IS CLEAR HERE.  IT IS NOT, AS YOU KNOW BASICALLY NOTHING TO BASE YOUR DECISION ON AND YOU’VE NEVER HAD AN INTEREST IN LEARNING ABOUT STOCKS AND BONDS.  YOU PUT EGO AND PRIDE IN THE BACKSEAT, AND CALL THE MANAGEMENT COMPANY WHO IS HANDLING “YOUR COMPANIES” ACCOUNT, THIS IS FREE ADVICE, OR YOU TALK WITH A PARTY FROM PERHAPS YOUR BANK WHO IS KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT STOCKS AND BONDS.  

THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE STUPID OR IGNORANT.  IT ACTUALLY SHOWS YOU ARE SMART, AND HUMBLE. IT IS WISE, FOR EXAMPLE TO LISTEN TO A FINANCIAL ANALYST, BECAUSE OUR MONEY WILL BE INVESTED IN THE BEST ACCOUNTS FOR OUR OWN BENEFIT AND FINANCIAL SITUATION. WE HAVE EXERCISED WISDOM INSTEAD OF IGNORANCE.  LET US TAKE A LOOK AT THE DEFINITION OF ADVICE IN OUR WEBSTER DICTIONARY:  1.  GUIDANCE OR RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING PRUDENT FUTURE ACTION, TYPICALLY GIVEN BY SOMEONE REGARDED AS KNOWLEDGEABLE OR AUTHORITATIVE.  2.  INFORMATION;  NEWS.  DAILY WISDOM WORDS DEFINITION OF ADVICE-SMART AND EDUCATED WISDOM GIVEN WHEN ASKED BY ANOTHER FOR AN OPINION ON SOMETHING WE ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE WITH.  

SOMETIMES IT IS HARD TO ASK FOR ADVICE FROM ANOTHER.  FOR EXAMPLE, YOU ARE A NEW MOTHER.  YOUR BABY HAS BEEN CRYING DAY AND NIGHT.  YOUR MOTHER-IN -LAW SHOWS UP TO SEE  HER GRANDSON.  SHE IS CONCERNED BECAUSE SHE NOTICES HE FEELS WARM TO HER TOUCH.  THIS IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD HAVE NOTICED, BUT HAVE BEEN RATTLED BY ALL THE NOISE OF YOUR BABY CRYING.  YOU’RE A NEW MOTHER, EXPERIENCING A SITUATION LIKE THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME.  AS MUCH AS YOU HATE LOOKING LIKE THE NEW MOTHER YOU ARE TO YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW, YOU PROBABLY, FOR THE BEST INTEREST OF YOUR CHILD LISTEN TO HER.  AFTERALL, SHE HAS RAISED FOUR CHILDREN ON HER OWN!  I DIDN’T SAY IT WAS ALWAYS EASY TAKING ANOTHER PARTIES ADVICE.  MY POINT IS IN THE END, YOU WIN.  YOUR CHILD MAY BE SICK, NEEDING AN ANTIBIOTIC.  YOUR MOTHER- IN-LAW IS HAPPY TO TAKE HER NEW LITTLE GRANDSON TO THE PEDIATRICIAN AND THE BEST PART OF THIS IS YOU GET A BREAK FROM A SITUATION THAT IS OVERWHELMING YOU AND A CHANCE TO CATCH A SHOWER AND NAP.

Never Stop Learning

In a previous post, I had talked about how perfection is never really possible. I’d like to expand a little more on that same thought today.

If we accept that perfection is unattainable, then we must also remember that we can never, nor should we, ever stop learning.

Whether it be pioneers in technology or in the corporate world or in literature, masters of their respective crafts have always agreed on one philosophy: that they became masters precisely because never stopped learning.

On the flipside, there are also examples of individuals falling or companies shutting down because the people in charge rested on their laurels.

By continuing to learn, not only do we keep moving forward in life but we also manage to keep our ego in check by admitting that we don’t know everything there is to know.

Because however well you know something, someone somewhere always knows more.

So never stop exploring. Never kill your curiosity. Always seek further knowledge of something.
