“Death ends a life, not a relationship.”
-Mitch Albom

In previous posts, I have talked about dealing with deaths of loved ones. To summarize those posts, I had written about how to keep loving the person that’s gone. I would like to expand on that thought a litte more today.

MEDITATION – AN INTRODUCTION

“The thing about meditation is: You become more and more you.”
-David Lynch

What exactly is meditation? The textbook definition is reaching a level of consciousness in your mind to where you can control what you think. In many ways, it’s nothing more than an advanced level of mindfulness.

AGE = MIND & BODY’S CHILD

“Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength.”
-Betty Friedan

We all dread it at some point. We try our best to stall it and when we can’t, we’d all like to pretend it’s not there by covering it up in any way possible.

I’m talking about aging.

MERRY “YOU” & A HAPPY “EXISTENCE”

As you celebrate the holidays, don’t forget to celebrate YOURSELF.

-Neel Trivedi

As I write this, Christmas is just a few days away. All around my neighborhood and nearby grocery stores, I see some of the brightest and beautiful lights. And that’s certainly a great feeling.

CARPE SECONDUS

“Carpe Diem”
-Horace

For centuries now, we’ve all heard the term “carpe diem.” But is that enough to live life to the fullest in the 21st century?

The term first originated in Roman poet Horace’s poetry collection, The Odes sometime in 23 BC. In context, the full line in which it appeared has been translated as “Seize the day; trust tomorrow e’en as little as you may.”

ASSUMING MAKES AN @$$…

“Before you ‘assume’, try this crazy method called asking.”
-Unknown

The year is 2000. I’m in high school. The bell has rung and I’m about to go from choir class to Spanish class. Spanish class has two textbooks which my teacher, Mr. Brown, uses interchangeably. Unfortunately, I’m not sure which one is needed for that particular day. Perhaps Mr. Brown had mentioned it the day before and perhaps he hadn’t. I can’t remember.

Are We There Yet?

Accomplishments will prove to be a journey, not a destination.
-Dwight D. Eisenhower

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

Usually, the aforementioned phrase is associated with a bunch of impatient kids squished together in a car with irritation laden in their voices.

I’M FLAWED…THAT’S OKAY

“Your flaws are perfect for the heart that is meant to love you.”
-Unknown

I’m flawed. You’re flawed. We’re all flawed and that’s okay. If we weren’t, we wouldn’t be human beings. Being flawed is an inevitable trait since the dawn of time and will be there until all life has perished.

So why do we not proclaim it as loudly as we do our talents and skills?

ELECTION ANXIETY & YOU

“Individualism is what makes cooperation worth living.”
-Henry Ford

As of this writing, (12:51 PM CT) most of America has been glued to their TV sets, phones, computers and/or any other device which will inform them updates about the presidential election. Even those that haven’t have at least been holding their breath and on their toes while going about other daily tasks.

And theses emotions are normal as there is no doubt, a lot at stake. But as we all grapple with what I’ve termed “election anxiety,” we should remember that the fate of individual happiness does not, nor should it, begin and end with one person no matter who wins.

DNRS – PART 1 – INTRODUCTION

“There is no reality, only perception. Identify the filters through which you view the world.”
-Dr. Phil

What is Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS)? Founded by Annie Hopper, a limbic system rehabilitation specialist, DNRS claims to be a neuroplasticity-based treatment method for chronic illnesses, some physical and some psychological.

If we break it down, neuroplasticity is basically the functioning of different networks in our brains. These networks allow the brain to grow (or shrink), organize, direct and redirect depending on the environment we’re in at any given time.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

“Mindfulness isn’t difficult. We just need to remember to do it.”
-Sharon Saltzberg

In a previous article, I had discussed how a state of mindfulness is not just a mental or psychological exercise. Done properly, it can also have a number of physical benefits as well. After writing that article, I got a couple of questions asking how exactly one would get started if they’ve never done so before. It’s my hope that this article answers some of those questions and serves as a basic introduction to mindfulness meditation.
